13-Year-Old, Jake Griffin Collects Pair of Weekend Wins
QUINCY, IL (Sept. 17, 2012) – The racing season may be winding down, but 13-year-old Jake Griffin’s schedule is busier than ever as he again took part in a triple header over the weekend, and by the time that the final checkered flag dropped he had two more wins to show for his efforts.
The weekend opened on Friday night at Tri City Speedway (Pontoon Beach, Illinois) with a Weekly Racing Series Event for the UMP Super Late Model and UMP Open Wheel Modified division. In the UMP Super Late Model division seventeen entries registered for action, and it would not be the best of outings for Jake as he was only able to manage a sixteenth place finish after battling handling issues. In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division thirty-eight entries registered for action, and after finishing third in his heat race he locked into the ninth starting spot for the feature in his #08 Bob Pierce Open Wheel Modified. He would battle in the top ten for the duration of the event before crossing the finish line in the tenth position. Full results are available at www.TriCitySpeedway.net.
On Saturday the team traveled to the Show Me state for another Weekly Racing Series Event with the UMP Super Late Model and UMP Open Wheel Modified division at Montgomery Motorsports Park (New Florence, Missouri). In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division Jake earned the third starting spot for the feature via preliminary action and would go on to race his way to the lead and the win! In the UMP Super Late Model division heat race difficulties left Jake starting fifteenth on the grid in his #08 Bob Pierce Super Late Model for the feature before he advanced twelve spots to a third place finish in the final rundown.
The weekend concluded on Sunday evening at Quincy Raceway (Quincy, Illinois) with another doubleheader of UMP action. Eighteen entries took part in the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, and after registering the second quickest lap in time trials Jake locked into the dash, where he finished fifth. Via his fifth place finish he started fifth in the feature, but he wouldn’t stay there long as he raced his way to the front of the pack and went on to claim his eleventh win of the 2012 season. He was followed across the finish line by David Wietholder, Jared Schlipman, Craig Spegal, and Tony Patterson. In the UMP Super Late Model division Jake started tenth before crossing the finish line in the thirteenth position. Full results for both divisions are available at www.QuincyRaceways.com .
An excited Griffin commented, “It was a great weekend for us against some tough racers. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going in the upcoming special events.”
Jake will return to action this Thursday through Saturday night at Tri City Speedway (Pontoon Beach, Illinois) in the Summit Modified Nationals. A $3,000 winner’s check will be on the line each night for the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, while a $2,000-to-win purse will also be up for grabs each night in the UMP Super Late Model class. The weekend will conclude on Sunday evening at Quincy Raceway (Quincy, Illinois) with a Weekly Racing Series Event.
