34 Raceway adds UMP Summer Nationals to 2013 Schedule
BURLINGTON, IA (Nov. 30, 2012) – 34 Raceway promoters have announced the return of the UMP Summer Nationals to the 3/8 mile for the 2013 season. After announcing in early November that the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars will be returning to 34 Raceway on June 7 promoters have now announced another huge event has been added to the 2013 schedule.
On July 13 the ground shaking United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) Late Model Summer Nationals Hell Tour will be coming to 34 Raceway with
$10,000 going to the winner. The UMP Summer Nationals tour first made an appearance at 34 Raceway in 1996 with Scott Bloomquist taking the win. The tour returned in 2011 with fans seeing Muscatine’s Brian Birkhofer taking the checkered flag.
“When we decided to go with the UMP late models for next year, the Hell Tour was the next thing on my list,” Laue said. “I talked to Sam (UMP Summer Nationals Series Director Driggers) and told him that if we were doing a 10-week series with the UMPs, we would like to have a Summer Nationals race, as well. We were fortunate enough to get a Saturday night. It’s toward the end of the series. Championship night is on July 20.”
Laue said that as of now, the 34 Raceway show is the only Iowa stop for the Hell Tour in 2013.
“We hope to draw some of the top guys for some of our other shows.
The UMP Summer Nationals is a grueling six-week schedule featuring 32 races. Last year, the schedule was condensed into five weeks, with 28 shows at 28 different tracks around the Midwest.
In 2012, 14 different drivers won races on the circuit. Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., is the defending champion after winning five feature races and earning 1,857 points. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., finished second in the points with 1,787. Other top names on the series last year included Brian Birkhofer, Billy Moyer, Billy Moyer, Jr., Brandon Sheppard, Dennis Erb., Jr., Bobby Pierce, Wendall Wallace, Don O’Neal, Mark Burgtorf and Jimmy Mars.
“We hope to draw some of the top guys for some of our other shows.
They might want to come in and get a feel for the track before that race,” said 34 Raceway co-owner Jeff Laue, who raced in the 1996 event. “This is a big event for us. I hope it will be a good draw.”=
