Four new winners at Davenport Mid-Season Show
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 19, 2015) – With dry weather conditions, the Davenport Speedway hosted the Mid-Season Championships Friday night. Four new faces graced victory lane for the first time in 2015.
It was a familiar face leading the way in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model main. Justin Kay took the lead from Brian Harris on lap five, en route to his third feature win in five races at Davenport. Andy Nezworski started sixteenth, but had a strong run and finished second. Chuck Hanna nipped Brian Harris for third at the checkered flag. Nate Bueseling completed the top five.
Kay, Harris, and Matt Ryan, were late model heat winners.
Milo Veloz Jr. topped a huge field of Milan Heating & Air IMCA Modifieds. Veloz started fifth and took the lead from Mitch Morris on lap seven of the twenty lap feature. After a couple of caution flags near halfway, Veloz cruised to the win by almost a straightaway over Chris Zogg. Tony VonDresky, Mitch Morris and Craig Crawford finished third through fifth respectively.
Modified heat wins went to Zogg, George Spence III, Nick Hixson, and Matt Werner. Craig Crawford won the semi-feature.
The Koehler Electric Street Stock feature was a barn-burner. Phil Anderson started on the pole, led thirteen of the fifteen laps, and finished second. Coming to the white flag, Cary Brown forced his way under Anderson. The two drivers would go door-to-door on the final lap, until Brown got the advantage coming off turn four. The victory was Cary’s first of the season.
Anderson would end up in second, with Josh Neal third. Nick Claussen came home in fourth and Keith Blum took fifth.
The Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMods saw Austin Moyer score his first win of the season at Davenport. Moyer led every lap on his way to victory lane. Tony Olson finished in second, followed by Jarrett Franzen. Bryce Garnhart finished fourth, just ahead of Tyler Soppe.
Moyer, Franzen, and John Irwin won the heats. Tyler Soppe won the semi-feature.
Josh Riley put his name in the win column, in the Roto-Rooter 4-Stock division. Riley led every lap of the feature, but was under attack nearly the entire race. Riley held off Scott Powell, Brandon Dahl, Zach Dahl to take the win. The attacking trio finished second through fourth, in that order. Luke Benischek finished fifth
Next Friday, June 26th, will be the second Kid’s Night of the 2015 season at the Davenport Speedway. Weekly point racing action will be held in all five classes. Bike races will be held after the racing program has concluded.
