Sams Body Shop Night win goes to Sam
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (6-2-12) Three drivers got their first wins of the 2012 season at 34 Raceway on Sams Body Shop night Saturday, June 2. A beautiful night for watching area racers take to the 3/8 mile track saw three of the six classes seeing first time winners this year. Getting their first wins Saturday night were Sam Halstead (late models), New London, Cale Samberg (stock cars), Burlington and Casey Mehaffy (4 cylinders), Danville. Three racers got repeat feature wins with Scott Hogan (modifieds), Vinton, Ryan Jamison (305 sprints)m Mediapolis and Tony Dunker (sport mods), Quincy, Il. all making it back to the winners circle.
Coming up this week at 34 Raceway on Saturday, June 9 will be point race action on Louisa Communications Night for the IMCA Late Models, W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints, Coors Silver Bullet IMCA Modifieds, Mikes Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars, Pepsi Hobby Stocks and I-Wireless/Louisa Communications 4 Cylinders. 34 Raceway will also welcome GE Employees on General Electric employee Night. TA Auto & Tire/I-Wireless Lil Racers Club kids are minded to sign up for prize giveaways. Upcoming Lil Racer Club events include more prize giveaways, on track autograph session and a candy dash. The first feature race of the night was the I-Wireless/Louisa Communications 4 Cylinders taking to the track. Casey Mehaffy would take the lead from Daytona Fenton on lap eight of the twelve lap feature and would go on to take his first checkered flag this year holding off Billy Stanford for the win.
A nice field of seventeen modifieds would take to the track next with Mike Weikert, Jr., taking the early lead. Weikert would lead the field for the next seventeen laps before disaster would strike for the leader. Heading into turn three, Weikerts motor would lock up blowing his motor. A fire under the hood brought out the red flag and Weikert had to be towed to the pit area. When racing resumed, Scott Hogan would take over the lead and had to hold off Josh Foster the remaining three laps for his second win this year.
Sixteen Mikes Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars were up next with Cale Samberg and Tim Breuer on the front row. Samberg quickly took the lead pulling away early on. But mid race, Abe Huls would close the gap catching Samberg with the two doing some bumper to bumper racing. Joining the duo would be Matt Greiner as Samberg took the win by three car lengths and Huls edged out Greiner for second.
Shawn Whiting looked set to pick up his first W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprint feature win before disaster struck for Whiting. Whiting had developed a huge lead over the sixteen car field encountering lap traffic by lap fifteen. On lap seventeen, Whiting would try to pass a lap car on the inside in turn two and would lose control, jumping a boundary tire to bring out the yellow flag. When racing resumed, Ryan Jamison would take over the first place spot and would go on to get his second win this year by several car lengths.
Who better to win the IMCA Late Model feature on Sams Body Shop night than Superman Sam himself. New Londons Sam Halstead took the lead from his front row start first holding off Joey Gower for the first twelve laps and then Todd Malmstrom the final thirteen laps to get his first late model win this season. Halstead has some fun with the crowd when he had to make good on a promise to wear a pair of Superman underwear over his fire suit after his first win.
The final feature of the night saw the Weikert Iron and Metal Sport Mods take on the 3/8 mile with Tony Dunker getting his third straight win. Levi Smith lead the first five laps before getting loose coming out of turn one allowing Dunker to make the pass and going to take the win one lap later.
