Morris family doubles up at Davenport Season Opener

DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 22, 2016) – The Davenport Speedway celebrated the Koehler Electric Season Opener Friday night. For one family in attendance, victory lane celebrations started to look like a family reunion.
Mitch Morris and Jake Morris had identical nights at the Davenport Speedway, although in two separate classes. Mitch (IMCA Mod) and Jake (IMCA SportMod) each won their respective heat races. Each started their feature on the outside pole, led every lap, and won the features, which were run back-to-back.
Rob Toland led flag to flag for the win in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Toland set a blistering pace that no one was able to follow.
Brunson Behning finished a distant second followed by Luke Goedert. Matt Ryan and Jay Chenowith rounded out the top five.
Toland and Todd Cooney won the late model heat races.
In the Eriksens IMCA Modified feature that was won by Mitch Morris, Bryce Garnhart put together a nice run to finish second. Doug Crampton took third over Todd Hansen and Darrin Duffy.
Thirty-two mods were on hand Friday. Heat race wins went to Mitch Morris, Duffy, Garnhart, and Bob Dominacki. Ben Chapman and Chris Stein won the semis.
Jesse Owen continued his fast start to the 2016 season. Jesse led fourteen of fifteen laps Koehler Electric Street Stock main en route to the win. The race was stopped by the red flag on lap 13, when Austin Riggs’ car was turned over on its roof. Austin was able to walk away from the incident. Jeremy Gustaf took second with Nick Claussen third. Cary Brown and Donnie Louck completed the top five.
Following Jake Morris to the checkers in the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod feature was Dan Anderson. Tony Olson started dead last but finished third. Mike Goben and Casey Wages were fourth and fifth respectively.
4-Stocks joined in on the fun of the season opener. Brandon Setser was the fourth and final racer to lead the 4-Stock main. Andy Loy took second, finishing ahead of Luke Benischek, Wade Dahl, and Dustin Forbes, in that order.
Next Friday, April 29th, the points chase continues at the Davenport Speedway. The same five classes will be in action.
