Osweiler Takes Home the SportMod Cash at the CJ Speedway
Columbus Junction, IA (Friday, July 15, 2016) – What started out as a beautiful and cool night of racing on Friday at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, Iowa, turned into a night of beating mother nature. As half way through the feature events light rains started to fall, and thanks to everyone involved the night was completed. When it was all said and done two drivers enjoyed their first wins of the season, while four others were repeat winners.
The first feature to take to the track on the night was the 8 lap Kemper Trucking CJ Mini Haulers, with Wayne Noble and Brian Tipps leading the field to the green flag. Noble would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Tipps and Jacob Brown. Brown would over take Tipps for second on lap 3 and then went to work on Noble for the lead. Coming off turn 4 to complete lap 7 Brown was able to get under Noble for the lead, and then held on for the final lap to pick up his fourth win on the season. Tipps was 2nd, Jerad Ruble was 3rd, Drake Fenton came from 7th to finish 4th, with Noble getting sideways off turn 4 on the final lap and holding on to finish 5th.
Up next was the 15 lap Tyson Fresh Meats SportMod feature, with Colton Livezey and Charlie Weber drawing the front row for the event. Livezey grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Weber and Troy Philpott. The action up front was slowed on the completion of lap 1, as Aaron Osweiler spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Livezey jumped back out front, with Philpott over taking Weber for the runner up spot. While Livezey worked to hold off Philpott for the lead, Osweiler was working his way back to the front. On lap 7 Osweiler slipped past Philpott into the runner up spot and then went to work on Livezey for the top spot. Livezey was able to hold off Osweiler until coming out of turn 4 to get the white flag, Osweiler was able to slip under him to grab the lead. Osweiler then held off Livezey over the final lap to claim his first win of the season at the track and taking home the $600 top prize to go with it. Livezey was 2nd, Philpott was 3rd, Kyle Hill was 4th, and Scott Walker, who drove his son’s 9w SportMod, would come home in 5th.
Richard Hurlbut and John Whalen led the field to the green in the 12 lap Louisa Communications IMCA Sport Compact feature, with Hurlbut grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Cody VanDusen and Whalen. Hurlbut then held the lead until lap 7 when he got sideways down the backstretch and collected three other cars to bring out the yellow. Jake Benischek, who started 8th, inherited the lead on the restart and then held off a last lap challenge from VanDusen to pick up his fifth win of the season at the track. VanDusen was 2nd, Brendon Schultheis was 3rd, Bill Whalen Jr. came from 9th to finish 4th, with Bryerson Tharp finishing 5th after starting 15th.
The 10 lap Mod Lite feature was up next, with Michael Dominguez and Robert Guss making up the front row. Guss would take advantage of his starting spot to jump out front on lap 1 over Dominguez and Wyatt Wilkerson. With Guss out front the battle was for second, as Dominguez worked to hold off Wilkerson and Collin Ball. Ball was able to over take Dominguez for second on lap 9 and then tried to slip past Guss on the final lap. But Guss would hold him off to score his second win of the season at the track. Ball was 2nd, Dominguez was 3rd, Wilkerson was 4th, with Brad Lucy rounding out the top 5.
Matt Bodman and Dan Albright drew the front row for the 15 lap P&L Transportation Modified feature, with Albright jumping out front to lead lap 1 over Bodman and Johnathan Huston. Albright then held the top spot until lap 2, when contact between him and Bodman resulted in Albright spinning in turn 2 to bring out the caution. On the restart Huston inherited the lead, with Brandon Banks, who started 7th, and Johnny Walker Jr. close behind. Banks would slip under Huston on lap 5 to grab the top spot away, leaving Huston to battle Walker Jr. for the runner up spot. Without a caution over the final 10 laps Banks would pull away to claim his second win of the season at the track. Walker Jr. won the battle for 2nd, Huston was 3rd, Dugan Thye was 4th, with Albright recovering from the spin on lap 2 to come back up to finish 5th.
The 15 lap Kauffman Electric IMCA Stock Car feature was the final feature to take to the track on the night, with Jeremy Tompkins and Sky Griffith leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was third place starter Dane Fenton who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Griffith and Rod Staats. While Fenton paced the field out front the battle was for the second spot, as Griffith, Jason Hartman, who started 8th, Kirk Kinsley, who started 10th, and Greg Gill, who started 7th, raced side-by-side. The action up front was slowed on lap 10, when Staats spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Gill would slip under Fenton to grab the top spot away, with Hartman working to hold off Kinsley for third. Gill then held on over the final 5 laps to pick up his first win of the season at the track. Hartman was 2nd, Nathan Wood started 12th and finished 3rd, Griffith was 4th, with Tad Payne coming from 9th to round out the top 5.
