Anderson Picks Up Third Straight Win
STUART, IOWA (June 10) – Stuart Speedway welcomed back racers and fans for the fifth night of the regular racing season. Mother Nature, however, wasn’t sure if she wanted to see racing or not! The wind was blowing and rain was on the way, but it didn’t stop David Schlicht, Andy Forcht, John Watson, Jeff Anderson and Luke Wanninger from taking home the wins on a fast and furious Sunday evening.
The night began with a speech from Stock Car driver Keith Miner. Keith has been diagnosed with ALS and he and quite a few local drivers have banded together to raise money and awareness for a disease that, for now, is incurable. Keith may be slowing down physically, but he still has the passion and drive for the sport he loves. Everyone at Stuart Speedway would like to thank Keith and all of the Racers Against ALS for everything you do. You all should be very proud of your efforts!
Racing for the evening kicked off with the IMCA Northern Sportmods and their fifteen lap feature. Casey Gruebel and Joe Simbro brought the field to green and they wouldn’t quite get a lap in when Jeremy Embrey caught the banking on the backstretch and rolled over to bring out the red flag. Embrey walked away but his car was done for the night. Once the cars were lined back up, Ty Luellen grabbed the lead from his third starting spot and held the point for the first three laps. Last week’s winner Austin Paul moved past Luellen on lap four and looked to make it two straight wins. Things changed for Paul on lap twelve when his car suddenly spun in turn two, collecting Gruebel and ending both of their nights. That handed over the lead to fifth starting David Schlicht and it was a lead he would not relinquish. Schlicht took home his second win of the year over Josh Pruitt, Nick Roberts, Ty Luellen and Clint Luellen. Ty Luellen and Cole Ferguson were the heat race winners.
6 Cylinder FWD’s came out next with Jordan Peters and Andy Forcht on the front row. Jim Britton led lap one with Peters right behind. Contact between the front row starters drew the black flag for Peters as Britton slowed in turn one. That handed over the lead to Jake Coughennower. That lead lasted for one lap as Forcht took over the top spot. Forcht and Coughennower came together as the white flag flew and Coughennower came to a stop in turn one. Forcht would take his first win of the season under the yellow checkered flags. Britton, the heat race winner, took home second with Coughennower and Peters rounding out the top four.
Nathan Lange and Andrew Burg brought out the IMCA Hobby Stocks next for their fifteen lap feature. Burg led lap one as a mess of cars got together just past the flag stand. Point leader Brandon Pruitt got the worst of it as he climbed the wall in turn one and came to a stop to bring out the caution. Pruitt would restart in fourteenth position with fourteen laps remaining. Once the green flag was displayed, Burg held the lead with first Jamie Songer and then John Watson following in his tracks. Watson made his move on lap seven and flexed the muscle he has shown around central Iowa this year to lead the rest of the way and pick up his first win of the season at Stuart. While Watson’s win was impressive, the story of this race was Pruitt as he weaved his way through traffic with no cautions to assist him and ended the race one spot out of the lead in second place! Aaron Rudolph took third with Austin Luellen fourth and Jason Kohl fifth. Luellen and Watson were the heat race winners.
Nineteen IMCA Stock Cars were up next with Scott Bailey and Ron Godwin setting the pace for their twenty lap feature race. Bailey led the first two laps until the winner the previous two weeks, Jeff Anderson, powered by on the top side to lead lap three. Jeremy Gettler followed in second until lap seven when Marcus Fagan moved by and began to track Anderson down. Fagan had a couple of opportunities when lap traffic held up the leader, but Anderson was not to be denied in picking up his third straight win at the speedway. Fagan ended in second with Jeff Joldersma third, Jamie Schirm fourth and Brian Blessington fifth. Fagan, Anderson and Schirm were the heat race winners.
With lightning to the west the IMCA Modifieds came to the track with Scott Bash and Luke Wanninger on the front row for their twenty lap feature. Wanninger took the top spot right away with Josh Gilman following close behind. Randy Havlik brought out the yellow on lap two bringing Gilman up behind the #20 machine. Gilman stayed within shouting distance of Wanninger, but the Jefferson, IA driver would have little resistance and went on to pick up his second win of the season. Gilman finished in a strong second with Jimmy Gustin third, Alison Davidson fourth and Tony Hilgenberg fifth. Gilman and Wanninger were the heat race winners.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track on a somewhat questionable weather evening. The races started right at 6pm and ended just before 8pm! While the show was definitely hurried along, everything went pretty smooth and I believe everyone got their money’s worth! Next Sunday will be First State Bank Night at the Races where you can see all of our regular classes plus the IMCA Late Models and Cruiser Cars. See you there!
