New promoter has high expectations for Maquoketa Speedway
MAQUOKETA, Iowa (March 9, 2018) – There are high expectations this season at Maquoketa Speedway, where Nick McCrady takes over as promoter.
The ¼-mile dirt oval opens on April 14 with Saturday night programs featuring five IMCA divisions scheduled through Aug. 25.
“I see something here that has potential. I want to see how I can make this track even better for drivers and fans,” McCrady said. “We’re going to work very hard at building our weekly car counts and we’re very excited about having the Deery Brothers Summer Series here on May 5.”
IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Late Models, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods are back on regular race programs at Maquoketa while IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars are newly-sanctioned.
Late Models have been a weekly staple at Maquoketa for the past 17 years. Modifieds returned in 2009, Northern SportMods were new in 2012 and Hobby Stocks were added in 2015.
Twenty point races will be held during the upcoming IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing season.
“IMCA is really for the budget racer,” said McCrady, who raced in street stock and sportmod divisions before ending his on-track career in a modified. “They’re not going to do anything with the rules that make it impossible for budget racers to afford or that would keep them from being competitive. That’s what I like most about IMCA.”
The new track crew includes Randy Massarolo, who has worked at area tracks for many years and who will be in charge of preparing the racing surface.
Lisa Sanders is returning to the track and Randy Anderson, IMCA’s Late Model director, will help with tech as his travel schedule permits. Kevin Feller will be scoring and Doug Haack will be throwing the flags weekly.
The Speedway Fire and Rescue crew will be at the track on race nights and the Lil’ Racer Car Club for the young race fans is new to the track this year.
“A lot of what we’re doing this year wouldn’t be possible without the help of our local sponsors,” noted McCrady. “I’ve knocked on a lot of doors and have been very pleased with the response from the community.”
McCrady worked at Quad City Speedway, Davenport Speedway and Cedar County Raceway before taking the top job at Maquoketa.
Modified points earned at Maquoketa count in IMCA’s Side Biter Chassis North Central Region, Stock Car points in the EQ Cylinder Heads Northern Region and Hobby Stock points in the Big Daddy Race Cars Northern Region.
