Elliott, Dixon, Harris, Noll and Mercer Among Winners on Tompkins Industries Night at the Races
By: Jacob Blair
WINSTON, Missouri (May 12, 2018) The USRA B-Modifieds were first to hit the track on Tompkins Industries night at the races for the scheduled make-up feature from last week. Front row starter Ed Noll drove around Luke Nieman on the top side of a tacky racetrack and began to set the pace for the caution free feature. Ed Noll clicked off the laps and fended off any challengers on his way to the feature win. Luke Nieman finished second, while Chris Cain, Randy Ainsworth and Dustin Miller rounded out the top five.
The Pure Stocks kicked off the regularly scheduled features for Mother’s Day Weekend racing action. Beau Wells jumped out to the early lead and grew it to a sizeable advantage. Behind him, the field diced it up for the second position, were eventually Ron Hill prevailed and began to chase down Wells. Hill got to the back bumper of Wells as a yellow flag graced the speedway. Wells then had an issue and Hill inherited the lead. On the restart, Hill drove away and into McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle. Jacob Grotewiel came from a sixth-place starting position to finish second. Jack Turner, Shawn Huston and Chester Kaufman made up the rest of the top five.
The E-Modifieds would find a familiar face picking up the win as Chris Mercer made it four in a row. LeRoy Morrison provided the only challenge to Mercer early, but Mercer found his groove and sailed to the win. Morrison finished second, while Gary Ainsworth and Justin Marrant battled for third, with Ainsworth prevailing for that position. Marrant finished fourth and Jason Ensley fifth.
The Midwest Lightning Sprints were next to take to the 3/8ths mile speedway. Mark Billings made a late race pass to pick up the feature win. Kyle Lewis had a solid run to finish second. Ken Billings, Greg Murray and Jeff Bard rounded out the rest of the top five.
The Grand Nationals ripped through their feature caution free. Chad Fuller got out front early, but Houston Johnson ran right around the cushion and made a pass for the lead that eventually put him in winner’s circle. Fuller finished second, Billie Hoover third, John Hanson Fourth and John Winslow fifth.
The Sport Compacts provided another close race for the win. Alvin Cooney took the lead early, although Steven Bunton did not let Cooney out of his sights. Several times, Bunton showed the nose to Cooney and got to his inside, but Cooney ran the top side of the speedway and keep up the momentum and held Bunton off. Cooney would end up winning the feature with Bunton second. Nate Castellano, Dave Petty Jr. and Joe Mastin rounded out the top five.
The USRA Stock Car feature may have only had a few cars, but they still put on one exciting show. Jeff Dixon, Eddie Schwope III and Cody Clarke traded positions the first half of the feature. At halfway, Clarke took the lead and began to create a gap back to Dixon. With only a few to go, Clarke jumped the cushion, handing the lead to Dixon. Schwope followed Dixon, passing Clarke and slotted into the second position. Dixon won the feature, while Schwope held off Clarke for second.
The USRA B-Modifieds brought a stout field of 20 cars to the speedway. After a clean start the caution flew on lap three. From then on, the caution flew several more times before the race ended. Luke Nieman led most of the feature, although a hungry pack of B-Modified drivers were trying to find a way by. Daniel Harris posed the biggest threat and late in the race made his move. Harris worked around Nieman and won the feature. Nieman hung on to finish second. Ed Noll and Corey Myers battled side by side for several laps with Noll finishing third and Myers fourth, while Chase Galvan finished fifth.
The USRA Modifieds had some difficulty getting laps in the books to start. A six-car pile-up in turn four left several contenders out of the race early. After several other incidents, other contenders were wounded and attrition started to take its toll. Eventually the race would stay green as the final 18 laps were run caution free. Dennis Elliott started up front and found the low side of the speedway to his liking and put on a clinic. Elliott would take the checkered flag by almost a half track margin. Darren Shaw, one of those involved in an early incident rallied to finish second. Chase Breid ran a solid race to finish third. Billie Hoover, John Hanson and Danny Barker battled all race long to settle the rest of the top five. Hoover took fourth and Hanson rounded out the top five.
