Harry Hanson Tops the Tango at the Tundra
Superior, WI (June 22, 2018)
The opening night of the “Tango on the Tundra”, the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series/Northern Renegades north-south challenge got under way at the Gondik Law Office Speedway in Superior. Ten POWRi Lucas Oil UMSS drivers from the south made the trip north to lock horns with five representatives from the Northern Renegades.
The PIRTEK Fluid Transfer Solutions heat race #1 went to Bryan Roach and Scott Brandt claimed the Rock Auto heat race #2, with reigning series champion Mike Mueller earning the most passing points. The top six points earners redrew for the 25-lap main event with Anna Hippe and Roach capturing the front row.
At the drop of the green, Hippe shot to the point with Roach and Mueller tucked in behind. With five laps in, Mueller snuck under Hippe for first. With the top four running the catfish line, Northern Renegade challenger and local favorite Harry Hanson braved the cushion. After a few laps to feel it out, Hanson became noticeably faster and started picking off the leaders. With ten laps in, just as Hanson was pulling near Mueller for the lead, the yellow light blinked on for the idled Neal Matuska hotrod at the turn one exit. On the restart, Hanson went right back upstairs with Mueller sticking to his low groove guns. But there was just a little more speed for the #7 upstairs as Hanson took over the top spot at the halfway mark. Once up front, Hanson ran flawlessly the rest of the way to claim the opening round of the north/south challenge. Mueller stayed strong to bring home a solid second, with Brad Peterson using the top groove to work up to third. After dropping back as far as sixth, Hippe moved upstairs late and clawed her way back to fourth with Jon Lewerer rounding out the top five.
Night two of the north/south challenge is Saturday night, at the ABC Raceway in Ashland, WI.
