Gustin wins “Racin’ for Rian” Memorial and 14 year old Austin Johnson wins first career Feature at I-35 Speedway!
by Phillip Wilson – I-35 Speedway Announcer/PR
WINSTON, MO (June 23, 2012) – Drivers checked into I-35 Speedway tonight to put on a show for the fans and hopefully tame the 3/8 dirt oval in Winston Missouri. After the final checkered flag flew one driver cashed in on our $1,000 to win race, took home a great looking 6′ trophy as another driver picked up his first career win.
In the IMCA Stock Cars Damon Murty (Chelsea, IA) made his second straight venture to I-35 tonight, and anyone who knows racing and the suoer nationals has heard of Murty. After a mechanical failure last week Murty looked to be humming right along to his first win at I-35 until the power plant in his 99D machine let go. After the restart and a few side by side laps Dean Wray (Jamesport) was able to get by Gene Stigall to pick up win number four on the season. Stigall (Winston) finished second, Kevin Anderson (KC, MO) in only his second week this season was third, Jake Cameron (Winston) was fourth and Nic Hanes (Trenton) finished fifth. Dean Wray gained nine spots to win the hard charger.
In “Border War” Grand National action it was 14 year old Austin Johnson (KC, MO) wiring the field holding off veteran and teammate Bud Wilson (Trenton). Johnson and Wilson battled hard side by side for seven laps. Wilson held on to second, Thomas Roberts (Kidder) had a good run in third, last weeks winner Mike Taylor Jr. (KC, MO) finished fourth and Travis Walker (Cameron) came home fifth. Bud Wilson gained four spots to win the hard charger.
Truman Asher (St. Joseph) took last week off and came back this week refocused, refreshed and came home with his third win of the season. Asher battled Scotty Grenier for a few laps before he pulled away. Grenier (Cameron) had another great run finishing second, Doug Keller (St. Joseph) finished third, Mike Tanner (KC, MO) rallied after pitting early to finish fourth and Paige Shaw (Lathrop) had a strong fifth place showing.
Mitch Booher gained fifteen spots to win the hard charger.
Tom Brown made his second trip to I-35 Speedway and left with his second win in the Midwest Lightning Sprints. Brown was chased and challenged by point leader Bobby Layne who finished second and Tony Layne was third.
Eric Stanton (Hartford, IA) won his sixth feature of 2012 in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Stanton got by Anthony Fletchall for the lead and never looked back. Opening night winner Andrew Hustead (Rutledge) finished second, Fletchall (Grant City) held on for third, Scott Treadwell (Trenton) rallied after starting last to finish fourth and Billie Hoover (Stewartsville) finished fifth. Stanton won another hard charger award.
The drivers in the “Racin’ for Rian” Modified Memorial had to draw for their starting heat positions and the top three had to redraw for their staring a-Feature position. After the redraw Todd Wilson and Hunter Marriot, two drivers who have won this season would lead the field to the green.
Early on Todd Wilson grabbed the lead and led for five circuits before Marriott ran him down and got by him on the high side. Marriott would lead the next fifteen laps before a visiting Richie Gustin reeled him in and got by leading the final five laps to take home the $1,000 grand prize. Gustin has raced at I-35 Speedway twice and took home two wins in his career. Marriott (Brookfield) finished second, Buz Kaster (KC, KS) was third, Todd Wilson (Spickard) was fourth and Jason Estes (Winston) ran fifth. Yancy Shephard gained fifteen spots to win the hard charger.
Next week is Mid-Season Points Championship night where top five trophies in the features will be given out and the Show-Me vintage Racers will be on hand!
