Rock Island County Fair Race
BY ROB HINCKLEY
EAST MOLINE, Ill. (July 21) – The dust cleared the first two times, making the third time the charm for Ayrton Gennetten.
The third generation Missouri ace took to the point and paced all 25 laps to win the Sprint Invaders feature during the Rock Island County Fair at East Moline Speedway Wednesday evening.
There were a pair of cautions at the start to restack the 21-car field. Then Gennetten went green to checkered for the victory.
Jonathan Cornell trailed early and lost the second spot to a charging Austin McCarl in traffic with five laps left. Chris Martin and Garet Williamson rounded out the top five.
The race was red flagged on one of the starts due to a Brayden Greubel flip. He was not injured.
It was the series first visit to EMS since 2009.
Travis Denning was not sure if the pole was the place to be for the J&J Camper Sales IMCA Modified 20-lap finale. But he answered that question in a hurry, racing to an early advantage, waiting out a couple cautions and holding off a charging Ken Schrader for the trip to the winners circle.
Denning quickly moved to the high groove as Schrader chose the middle. The former NASCAR star actually led lap 18 before Denning planted the right rear tire on the high cushion and propelled to the front for good.
Brandon Durbin, Donovan Lodge and Doug Lenth followed.
Jimmy Dutlinger showed his patience in the Riverbend Pizza Place Sport Compacts – not just in the race, but for several weeks. It paid off with the 15-lap feature win, his first in his new car.
Tommy Staggs had his best 2021 finish in the runner up spot. Jason Rhoads, Cyle Hawkins and Dustin Porter came next.
Hawkins led but had a flat tire three circuits from the end. He charged from the back.
The season continues on the quarter-mile dirt oval Sunday Aug. 1 with all seven regular classes in action. Gates open at 4 p.m. Hot laps are at 5:30 with racing to follow.
