Donnellson, IA (Friday, July 23, 2021) – After having a week off for the fair and another week off thanks to mother nature, the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa was able to get back to racing action on Friday, July 23rd. Conn Communications provided all fans going into the grandstands a chance to take in the night’s racing action for only $3, with many fans taking advantage of the discounted prices. At the end of the night the great crowd on hand got to witness three drivers earn their first win of the season at the track, while two others continued their winning ways.

Up first on the night was the 15 lap AVIS Car Rentals IMCA Sport Compact feature, with Justin Stevenson and Patrick McKasson leading the field to green. But it was fourth place starter Kaycee McGregor who would grab the lead on lap 1 over Stevenson and Luke Fraise. The race was slowed for the first and only time on lap 3, as Dyllan Bonk spun in turn 3 from contact from Adam Christy to bring out the yellow. On the restart McGregor jumped back out front, but now had Kimberly Abbott, who started 8th, and Brandon Reu, who started 9th, following her. Reu would work past Abbott for the runner up spot on lap 6 and then went to work on McGregor for the top spot. Coming out of turn 4 to complete lap 9 McGregor drifted too high, which allowed Reu to shoot under her for the lead. Reu then held off McGregor over the final laps to claim his fifth win of the season at the track. Abbott was 3rd, Fraise was 4th, with Bonk recovering from the spin on lap 3 to come back up to finish 5th.

The 18 lap Sonny’s Super Market IMCA Modified feature was up next, with Austin Howes and Cody Bowman making up the front row. Howes took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Dennis LaVeine and Jeff Waterman. The action up front was slowed on lap 3, when LaVeine slowed with troubles to bring out the yellow. On the restart Howes jumped back out front, with Waterman and Mitch Boles close behind. Howes, who was working the bottom of the track, had to work to hold off Waterman, who was running the top of the track, over the next 5 laps. When the second and final caution of the race appeared on lap 10, this time Levi Smith slowed in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Howes once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Waterman and Boles still following. While Howes paced the field out front, Mark Burgtorf, who started 10th, was working his way up to challenge him for the lead. Coming to the white flag Burgtorf was able to pull up to Howes’ back bumper. But Howes was able to hold him off to pick up his first win of the season at the Lee County Speedway. Waterman was 3rd, Jardin Fuller was 4th after starting in 7th, with Bill Roberts Jr. coming from 8th to round out the top 5.

When Beau Taylor elected to start at the tail for the 18 lap Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA Stock Car feature, this would move Chad Krogmeier to the front row alongside Peter Stodgel. Krogmeier used the move to the front row to his advantage by moving out into the lead on lap 1 over Jake Wenig and Jerry Jansen. Then just after lap 1 was scored complete Jake Powers spun in turn 2 from contact from Cole Mather to bring out the yellow. On the restart Wenig grabbed the lead, with John Oliver Jr., who started 6th, following him into the runner up spot. The lead for Wenig lasted until lap 4, when Oliver Jr. got under him to take over the top spot. While most of the field followed Oliver Jr. around the bottom of the track, Mather, who was sent to the rear from the contact on lap 1, went to the top of the track to try and work himself back up front. The move would pay off, as he climbed his way into third on lap 11. His momentum was slowed on lap 11 when Stodgel spun in turn 3 to bring out the final yellow. On the restart Oliver Jr. moved back out front, with Mather over taking Wenig for the runner up spot. Oliver Jr. and Mather would race laps 13, 14 and 15 side-by-side, with Mather being scored the leader on lap 15. Oliver Jr. tried to work back under Mather over the final laps, but Mather was able to hold him off to score his first win of the season at the track. Chris Wibbell was 3rd, Wenig was 4th, with Jason Cook finishing 5th after starting in 8th.

Ray Raker and Sam Halstead Led the field to the drop of the green flag in the 20 lap Iowa Corn Growers Association IMCA Late Model feature, with Halstead grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Raker and Matt Strassheim. While Halstead set the pace out front, Mark Burgtorf, who started 7th, was slowly working his way towards the front. On lap 9 Burgtorf was able to take over the runner up spot, and then went to work to cut into Halstead’s lead. Coming to the white flag, Burgtorf was able to pull up to Halstead’s back bumper. But Halstead would hold him off coming off turn 4 to claim his first win of the season at the Lee County Speedway. Strassheim was 3rd, Jay Johnson was 4th, with Nick Marolf coming home in 5th after starting in 11th.

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 18 lap Roberts Tire Center IMCA Northern SportMods, with Dave Kraus and Josh Holtman on the front row. But it was fourth place starter Jadin Fuller who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Tom Bowling Jr. and Brandon Lambert. Fuller then held the top spot until lap 3, when Bowling Jr. got by him for the lead. But Fuller would come back on the next lap to grab the top spot back. Fuller would again hold the lead until lap 6, when Austen Becerra, who started 10th, edged him out at the line to take over the top spot. Then just after the lap was scored complete the first caution of the event appeared, as a tire in turn 2 was clipped onto the surface to bring out the yellow. On the restart Ryan Moore spun in turn 2 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Becerra jump back out front, with Sean Wyett, who started 7th, and Fuller following. Just as Becerra started to enter heavy lapped traffic, the third caution of the race appeared. This time Matt Tucker spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Becerra once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Wyett and Fuller close behind. One more lap was scored complete when another caution came out, as Dakota Anderson spun in turn 4 from contact from Bob Cowman to bring out the yellow. On the restart, third and fourth place runner’s, Bowling Jr. and Tanner Klingele got together in turn 2 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Becerra move back out front, with Wyett and Fuller close behind. Wyett tried to challenge Becerra over the final laps, but Becerra was able to hold him off for his fifth win of the season at the track. Fuller was 3rd, Lambert was 4th, with Holtman finishing in 5th.
