Wray, Wilson, Shaw, Shaw and Hustead taste victory at I-35 Speedway!
WINSTON, MO (July 14, 2012) – It was Pettit Salvage night at I-35 Speedway tonight as 83 tough competitors took to the 3/8 mile dirt oval known as I-35 Speedway. Good turnout of cars and crowd yet again braved some hot temps to see some ultra hot racing.
Dean Wray (Jamesport, MO) picked up his sixth win of the 2012 season in the IMCA Stock Cars. Wray had a good battle with Gene Stgall for the lead, Wray eventually got around the defending points champ for the win. Newcomer Michael Jaennette (Newton, IA) came from the back to finish second, Bruce Fair (Trenton, MO) had a good run in third, Gene Stigall (Winston, MO) had another top five with a fourth place finish and Nic Hanes in only his fifth start in the class racked up his third top five finishing fifth. Jaennette went from sixteenth to second to win the hard charger.
In the “Border War” Grand Nationals Bud Wilson (Trenton, MO) also won for the sixth time this season, to keep him right on pace with Dean Wray for second place in wins at I-35 Speedway. Wilson got by his teammate Austin Johnson five laps in, never looked back and cruised to a straight-away win. Thomas Roberts (Kidder, MO) pitted early and caught a lucky break as a caution came out before we got a lap in meaning Roberts was still on the lead lap. Roberts restarted last and finished second, Travis Walker (Cameron, MO) had a good run finishing third, Austin Johnson (Kansas City, MO), last weeks winner was fourth and Mike Jones (Maysville, MO) finished fifth. Wilson won his third straight hard charger award.
The Midwest Lightning Sprints were on hand for the third time this season. The first two races were dominated by Tom Brown (Lincoln, NE). Tonight the entire 20 lap feature was dominated by Tony Layne (Kansas City, MO). Layne was chased across the line by Bobby Layne (Kansas City, MO) who finished second, Mark Billings (Columbia, MO) was third, Tom Brown had his two race win streak snapped and came home fourth, and fifth went to Jone Lane (Kansas City, MO).
Last week Chad Shaw was running a strong second before fading to a fifth place finish. Shaw’s excuse, “The driver just was fat and got wore out”. Tonight the driver didn’t let the weight get in the way and Shaw picked up his first win of the season. Shaw drove Aaron Duvall’s 27s machine to the front and dominated the IMCA SportMod feature. After a three week absence Jeff Stotts was back and was the only driver running the high line, that allowed Stotts to fly by traffic and challenge Shaw for the win. Shaw ran low Stotts ran high, the low side prevailed. Stotts (Trenton, MO) finished second, Ronnie Miller (Trenton, MO) was third, Mike Tanner (Kansas City, MO) caught in an early wreck rallied for a fourth place finish, and Brad Whitney (Trenton, MO) was fifth. Ronnie Miller went from sixteenth to third for the hard charger.
Andrew Hustead (Rutledge, MO) stared off the season winning the opening night IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Tonight he got his second win of the season. Rutledge held off Eric Stanton, a seven time winner, for the win. Stanton (Hartford, IA) driving a different car tonight after his car sustained major damage last week finished second, Anthony Fletchall (Grant City, MO) continued his good season finishing third, Darrin Christy (Kansas City, KS) finished fourth and Lee Farmer (Bethany, MO) was fifth. Stanton won another hard charger award.
Darren Shaw (Lathrop, MO) picked up his long awaited first win of 2012 in the IMCA Modifieds. Shaw used the high side to get the lead and had a three car battle with Jim Cameron and Blake Peeler, swapping the lead numerous times. Shaw would eventually pull away for the win. Blake Peeler (Trimble, MO) finished second, Jim Cameron (Cameron, MO) finished third, Yancy Shepard (Smithville, MO) finished fourth and Buz Kaster (Kansas City, KS) spun on lap one and rallied to finish fifth. Shepard gained eight spots to win the hard charger.
Next week tenderloins and fries will start being served in the new air conditioned suite. Also the Show-Me Vintage Racers will be at the speedway. For the remainder of July we will continue with the start times of 5:30 gate opening, 7:30 hotlaps and racing to follow.
