CALEB ADRIAN TOPS ANDERSON AUTOMOTIVE TROPHY DASH
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (Aug 10, 2012) – Racers and fans were treated to a cool summer evening Friday night for the 15th week of competition in the Papa Johns Cup/i-wireless Championship Series at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Performance Concepts Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Mountain Dew Sportsmen, Dublin City Pub INEX Legends, Sunline Hornets, and Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks were all in action running heats and features. In addition, the Legends were the featured division for the Anderson Automotive Trophy Dash.
Caleb Adrian of Davenport bolted into the lead from outside row one and outlasted the rest of the six-car field for the 6-lap Anderson Automotive Trophy Dash win, his first win at Hawkeye Downs and according to Adrian, his first Trophy.
In Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stock, it was business as usual for division leader Matt Petrzelka as he wasted little time in securing the point and the win. After Derek Parrott led the first lap Petrzelka moved alongside and the pair battled for one lap before Petrzelka made an inside pass in turn four of lap three to claim the lead. Petrzelka widened his lead as the laps ticked off the board. His closest challenger was Brad Chandler who ran second most of the race, holding off Roland Bohnsack. Blake Carson finished fourth and Parrott was fifth.
The win was the ninth of the season for Petrzelka.
Dave Ballstaedt led the opening stanza of the Mountain Dew Sportsmen feature before surrendering the point to Brian Gibson on lap two. By lap four, point leader Dave McCalla moved into challenging position and two laps later McCalla took the lead from Gibson. McCalla dominated the race from that point on with Gibson and Ballstaedt running second and third the rest of the way. Greg Hentrich finished fourth and Bob Ahrendsen was fifth. McCalla now has ten wins on the season.
In Dublin City Pub INEX Legends, Caleb Adrian led the first trip around the quarter-mile before division topper Kevin Korsmo blasted by on the backstretch on lap two of the scheduled twenty. By lap five, Bryce Bailey was on the move and slid into second with Adrian holding third. The pace slowed on lap eleven for a spin involving Al Diercks but when green flag racing resumed Korsmo continued to outpace Bailey and Adrian.
With six laps remaining, Bailey suffered mechanical problems and dropped out of the event, putting Adrian back into second and Dennis Diercks into third. Three laps later, last weeks winner, Rod McGlothlen, powered by Diercks to lay claim to third. Diercks settled for fourth while Tim Goettsch was fifth.
Jake Griffin posted a flag-to-flag run in Budweiser Modifieds to rack up his fourth win of 2012. Griffin and Ryan Luedtke ran side-by-side for the first two circuits around the half-mile before the Quincy, Il teen Griffin cleared the lead. Brian Gibson took second away from Luedtke on lap four and steadily gained on Griffin , finding himself glued to Griffin’s rear bumper on lap nine. After trying a couple runs at the leader Gibson fell back a bit, eventually having to settle for second place. Luedtke maintained third which Dave McCalla finished fourth. Travis Thompson was fifth.
In Sunline Hornets, Jose DeJesus started on point and lead the first lap before Brad Chandler powered by and into the lead on the second lap of the twenty-lap feature. That would prove to be the winning pass and Chandler outran the field for the remainder of the race. The pace was slowed once for a spin near the halfway point but Chandler pulled away again when the race resumed. Todd Ness was the closest challenger in the closing laps with a fast-moving Shane Hanson moving into third. DeJesus maintained fourth to the checkers while Kurt Bohnsack was fifth. The win was the third of the season for Chandler.
Finally, Andy Edwards outlasted point leader Thor Anderson to claim the Performance Concepts Late Model feature and his first win in an asphalt late model. Edwards took the lead on lap two and never faltered as Anderson looked for a way around. Anderson made several runs at Edwards, including pulling alongside with three laps remaining but Edwards prevailed for the hard fought win. Anderson held onto second wile Dudley Fleck was third. Jay Jaspers scored fourth and Jake Griffin was fifth.
Just two weeks remain in the season and next Friday night, August 17, is Caseys General Stores Night. Fans can score free tickets from their neighborhood Caseys by purchasing a Pepsi product.
