EAST MOLINE, IL (August 19, 2012) –
A jammed pack night of racing action was scheduled Sunday night at the Quad City Speedway with three make-up features to kick off the show before the regular weekly racing program.
The first event of the night was the make-up Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modified feature. The race picked up were it left off last week with two laps down. Doug Crampton wasted little time using the first three laps to work his way to the first and take over the lead. Crampton began building a sizeable lead but at the halfway point smoke began coming from Crampton’s #40. Thad Wilson started gaining on Crampton but it was too little too late as Crampton would hold on for the win. Wilson would take second followed by John Ahlers, Eric Barnes, and Brian Bushong.
The next make-up feature was the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stocks. Colona’s Chris Lawrence would take over the lead from Dwayne Smith Jr. and hold off a last lap charge by R.J. Gonzales and Rob Henry to pick up another feature win. Gonzales, who started last, would take second followed by Henry, Smith, and Chuck Fox.
The final make-up feature was the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Models. It only took Mike Garland the first eight laps to navigate his G1 machine to the front and lead the final 22 laps for the win in the caution free feature. Todd Malmstrom took second followed by Ray Guss Jr., who started 11th, Rob Toland, and Mike Zemo Jr.
In the Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modified feature John Ahlers took advantage of his outside second row starting to take the early lead. Ahlers would hold off a last lap onslaught by Greg Durbin, Terry Rentfro, and B.J. Jackson to take home the win.
The Mod Lites were up next with their $300 to win STARS event. Anthony Guss and Joel Huggins would battle side by side for the lead until a brief rain delay would bunch the field back up. Once the race got back underway Monmouth’s Chase Flatt made his move to front battling Huggins for the lead with Greg Rossell right on them. Flatt would take home the victory with Rossell second followed by Huggins, Dan Guss, and Bryan Brinker.
The Verplaetse Excavating UMP Modifieds put on another stellar 20 lap feature. Doug Curless immediately grabbed the lead with John Bull in tow. Donovan Lodge would use the bottom of the track to get by Bull and battled Curless side by side for the lead for the remainder of the caution free feature. Lodge could get right next to Curless but couldn’t make the pass as Curless proved to be too strong en route to his first win of the 2012 season. Lodge took second followed by Bull, Jerry Bailey Jr., and Kevin Hughes.
Moline’s R.J. Gonzales continued his momentum from the make-up feature earlier in the night in the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stocks to cruiser to the win. Gonzales went virtually unchallenged in the 15 lap feature with Cord Williams finishing second followed by Chris Lawrence, Chuck Fox, and Dwayne Smith Jr.
In the 30 lap Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature “Rocket” Rob Toland was not going to be out done by his nephew, R.J. Gonzales. Toland battled early race leader Bob Miller for several laps before taking control of the lead. Toland would go onto to pick up the win with Mike Murphy Jr. taking second after putting on a late race charge for the lead to no avail. Todd Malmstrom was third followed by Ray Guss Jr. and Miller.
The evening’s racing action was capped off with the exciting Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4-Cylinder feature. Cameron Poci held off fierce challenges from Aaron Hitt and Joe Zrostlik on the last four laps to take home his second feature win of the season. Hitt would take second followed by Zrostlik, Wade Dahl, and Zach Dahl.
Next Sunday will be another stacked night of racing with make-up features in the Mod Lites, Verplaetse Excavating UMP Modifieds, and Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4-Cylinders addition to the regular weekly racing program. Hot laps will be at 5:00pm with racing at 5:30pm.
