IMCA divisions fill Friday race programs at Crawford County Speedway

DENISON, IOWA (January 25, 2012) – Weekly racing returns to Crawford County Speedway this season, with six IMCA divisions seeing Friday night action at Denison.

Opening night for the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Mach 1 Sport Compacts is May 3, with point races scheduled through Aug. 9.

Five dates are planned for IMCA Late Models, June 7, July 5 and 24, and Aug. 2 and 9.

Sanctioned Modifieds, Late Models, Stocks and Hobbies last ran at Crawford County in 2004. The track was idle until 2012 when 13 events, one featuring the IMCA Late Models, were held.

“There are some pretty tough drivers around here. This is going to be an exciting season,” predicted co-promoter Joe Miller. “Shortening the track from a big half-mile to a 4/10-mile made for a lot of three and four-wide racing last year.”

The track had been pared in the fall of 2011, with the banking reduced all the way around. The cement wall outside turns three and four has been removed. The pit area will be expanded this spring, with larger tow rigs and trailers to be parked north of the second set of turns.

“We averaged 99 cars and around 1,200 fans a night last year,” Miller said. “It only took a month to get all our sponsors. We sold more than 50 billboards, so there was a lot of support. We have a very good relationship with the fair board, too, and that’s a good thing.”

He noted that Crawford County will run the same six divisions as Saturday night venue Shelby County Speedway in Harlan and five of the same divisions as Buena Vista County Raceway in Alta, a Wednesday night track.

“We’re only about 25 miles from Harlan and Alta is about 50 miles from us,” said Miller. “That means a driver can race three nights a week without a lot of travel and know that his car is going to be legal at all three tracks.

A two-day special, with features each night, is set for July 4 and 5. The county fair races are July 24.
Crawford County will be part of the Belleville Motorsports North Central Region for Modifieds, the Northern Region for Stock Cars and Stephenville Starter Northern Region for Hobby Stocks.

Sharing promotional duties with Miller will be Randy Kuhlmann, Chris Ullrich, Randy Tiffey and John Scott. Junior Reetz is the race director and Kay Schurke the assistant race director.
