by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Friday, May 24, 2013) – For the second week in a row mother nature allowed the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA to put on a racing program presented by Hy-Vee of Ft. Madison and Keokuk, IA. Jeff Mueller would claim his first career Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, while Jason Cook (Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Cars), Jim Gillenwater (Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMods), Dustin Griffiths (Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stocks), and Josh Barnes (Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts) each picked up there second wins on the season on the track.
The first feature up on the night was the 12 lap Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stocks, with Andrew Hustead and Dustin Griffiths on the front row. Griffiths would take advantage of his front row start to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Hustead and Dale Porter. Grittiths, Porter, Jason See and Hustead put on a show for the fans the entire 12 laps, with Griffiths holding them off each lap at the stripe. On the white flag lap, Porter drove it hard into turn 3 and was able to drift up in front of Griffiths to grab the lead briefly. As Griffiths used a cross over move to edge out Porter at the line by a nose to claim his second win in a row at the track. Porter was 2nd, See was 3rd, Hustead was 4th, with Ricky Miller Jr. rounding out the top 5.
Up next was the 16 lap Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMod feature, with Robert Gould and Rob Wilsey leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But just as the green was waved the yellow light would come on, as Bobby Anders got into the back of Victor Hastings in turn 3. Which caused Hastings to spin and bring out the caution. On the restart fourth place starter Jim Gillenwater moved out into the lead on lap 1 over Rick Barlow Jr. and Jacob Smith. After the completion on lap 1, Brett Lowry would spin in turn 1 to avoid a spinning car, but was the only car left sitting when the caution came out. Gillenwater once again jumped out into the lead on the restart, with Smith working to hold back Phillip Cossel, who started 11th, and Carter VanDenBerg, who started 13th. While Gillenwater continued to pace the field, Cossel and Vandenberg battled for the second spot on laps 5 thru 11. Vandenberg was able to clear Cossel for second on lap 12 and then went to work on Gillenwater for the top spot. The two would come up on a lap car on lap 14. Gillenwater would choose the low line to get around the lapped car, while VanDenBerg went high which was the same groove the lapped car was in. On the completion of lap 15 the final caution of the race appeared to set up a green-white-checkered overtime finish. Gillenwater would grab the lead on the restart and then held on to pick up his second win in a row at the speedway. VanDenBerg settled for 2nd, Cossel was 3rd, Tony Dunker was 4th after starting in 12th, with Lowry recovering from the lap 1 spin to come home in 5th.
Beau Taylor and Jake Wenig made up the front row for the 18 lap Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Car feature, with Taylor grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Abe Huls, who started 6th. The first caution of the race would come out on lap 2, as Jim Lynch spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Taylor jumped back out front, only to be slowed one lap later by another caution. This time Corey Strothman, who was running 3rd, spun in turn 1 and collected John Oliver Jr. to bring the yellow light back on. Taylor once again jumped out into the lead on the restart, with Jeremy Pundt working to hold back Huls and Jason Cook, who started 8th, in the battle for second. Cook would jump to the top of the track to over take Taylor for the lead on lap 6, with Huls following him into second. Cook then started to pull away from Huls, until the final caution of the event came out on lap 10. Lynch dropped a drive shaft in turn 1 to bring on the yellow light. On the restart Cook moved back out front, with Huls and Pundt battling side-by-side for second. Cook was able to hold back Huls and Pundt over the final 8 laps to pick up his second win of the season at the track. Huls won the battle for 2nd, Pundt was 3rd, Taylor was 4th, with new comer Norman Chesmore coming from 9th to round out the top 5.
Up next was the 14 lap Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compact feature, with Brent Hartley and Brandon Lambert making up the front row after Mike Miller was a scratch. But it was fifth place starter Josh Barnes who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Lambert and Hartley. Barnes continued to lead, as Lambert, Hartley and Kimberly Abbott waged a battle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. But Barnes would pull away in a caution free race to claim his second win in a row at the speedway. Lambert won the battle for 2nd, Hartley edged out a 3rd place finish, Abbott was 4th, with Brandon Reu coming from 8th to finish in 5th.
The final feature up on the night was the 15 lap Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, with Jeff Mueller and Jeff Waterman on the front row. But third place starter Brandon Banks would jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Mueller and Waterman. Banks then held the lead until lap 5, when Mueller took the high way around to grab the top spot. Mueller then started to pull away from second, when the first and only caution of the race appeared on lap 14 to set up a green-white-checkered overtime finish. Bill Roberts Jr., who was running 4th, slowed to a stop down the front stretch to bring out the yellow. On the restart Banks tried to work under Mueller, but Mueller was able to hold him off to claim his first career Budweiser IMCA Modified feature. Banks held on for 2nd, Mike Van Genderen was 3rd, Waterman was 4th, with Tyler Cale coming home in 5th.
