Kammerer rides high to Davenport Late Model win
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 7, 2013) – On a night when most drivers were searching for the shortest way around the racetrack, Stephan Kammerer used the high line to score his first Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model win of the season. After starting eighth, Kammerer passed Doug Nigh on lap nine for the lead, en route to the victory.
Andy Nezworski made a late race dash to finish second, with Nigh holding on for third. Ray Guss Jr. also had a late run to take fourth. Matt Ryan battled his way to a fifth place finish. Kammerer, Guss, and Justin Kay, won the late model heats.
The EMS IMCA Modified 20-lap feature saw a lot of passing early in the race, a lot of cautions in the middle, and a well-deserved victory at the end. Pole sitter Jake Bowman led lap one, with Brad Tyler leading at the end of lap two. Bowman came back to lead lap three, with eighth place starter Craig Crawford leading on lap four.
Once in the lead, Crawford would not be denied his first Davenport victory in several years. Craig hugged the bottom of the racetrack and survived several restarts to take the win.
Dan Klatt came from 15th starting spot to finish second, with Bowman third, Tyler fourth, and Kelly Meyer fifth.
Jeremy Marquette raced back to victory lane in the Koehler Electric Street Stock main. Marquette started fourth, took the lead early, and held off Cary Brown for the win. Chad Coyne, Henry Carson, and Bryan Ritter, finished third through fifth respectively.
It was déjà vu in the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod division. The finishing order for first through fourth, were the same in both the heat and feature races. Bryce Garnhart swept the evening, taking the checkered flag in both races. Jarrett Franzen doubled up the runner-up spot. Doug Burkhead took third and Kyle Hoffman fourth. Ricky Kay took fifth in the feature.
Aaron Hitt remains perfect for the season, in the Roto-Rooter 4-Stock division. Hitt started in the fourth row and didn’t see the lead until the midway point of the 12-lap feature. Once in front, Aaron cruised to his third points win of the year. Zach Dahl finished second, with Steven Phillips third. Brandon Dahl and Joe Zrostlik rounded out the top five.
As a special attraction, a full field of Midwest Jalopies were on hand. The vintage racing coupes did not disappoint the crowd, putting on a great show. Terry Mattly had a clean sweep for the evening, winning both his heat and the feature. Steve Johnson won the other heat and finished second in the feature. Austin Honts finished third.
Next Friday, June 14th, the racing program at the Davenport Speedway is highlighted by the IMCA SportMod 50. A $2,000 payday awaits the winner of the 50-lap feature. Weekly point races will be held in the other classes.
