Joldersma Takes the Cash Again
Story by Josh Reynolds
Stuart, IA (June 23, 2013) – A somewhat cool, overcast and windy day welcomed the fans and drivers of Stuart Speedway back for night number five of the young season. Andy Forcht, Matt Webb, Shannon Anderson, Jimmy Gustin, Shawn Cooney and Jeff Joldersma were the winners on Stew Hansen Dodge/Jeep Night at the Races.
After heat races the 6 Cylinder FWD’s came out for their feature with Cory Sauerman and Andy Forcht on the front row. Forcht wasted little time in shooting out to the lead with Sauerman in tow. Sauerman did all he could, but there was no catching the #17 Procrastinator Chassis as Forcht took his second win of the year. Sauerman was second with Daniel Duranceau third. Heat race winner Jacob Peters was unable to make the call for the feature.
IMCA SportMods were up next with Colby Oberembt and Jordan Peters on the front row. Cole Ferguson came from the third starting spot to lead lap one with Clint Luellen making the pass for the lead on lap two. Luellen set sail and looked to take the easy win, but as things go that would change drastically as he came through turn four to take the white flag. A part on Luellen’s car broke, causing the driveshaft to come out and ruin the right rear tire all at the same time. As Luellen coasted toward the flagstand, Matt Webb made the pass and took the white flag as Luellen came to a stop just before turn one. With the yellow flag coming out, the race was called with a yellow-checkered finish. Webb took his second win of the season with Oberembt second and Luellen, the last car on the lead lap, in third. Arie Schouten and Josh Cooper rounded out the top five. Ferguson was the heat race winner.
Bill Richards and Phillip Castellano brought out the IMCA Hobby Stocks next for their fifteen lap feature. Richards took the top spot on lap one with Castellano and Gina Greubel in tow. A lap four skirmish between Greubel and Castellano brought out the yellow and ended the night for both racers. That brought up Jeff Fink and Shannon Anderson behind Richards as the green flew on lap five. Anderson passed Fink right away and took the lead on lap eight, and set off looking for his fourth win in five starts. Brandon Pruitt got past Richards for second on lap thirteen, but there wouldn’t be enough time as Anderson cruised to the win. Pruitt ended in second with Richards third, Luellen fourth and Fink fifth. Pruitt and Anderson were the heat race winners.
IMCA Modifieds came out next with Casey Greubel and Jeff James showing the way. James led lap one with sixth-starting Jimmy Gustin taking over the lead on lap two. Three cautions brought Luke Wanninger and Josh Gilman up to the back bumper of Gustin, but each time the #19 Harris Chassis pulled away and Gustin went on to his first win of the season. Wanninger and Gilman put on a spirited battle for second with Gilman coming out on top and Wanninger third. Tony Cox finished an impressive fourth and Rex Parkison ended in fifth. Gilman and Gustin were the heat race winners.
Logan Richards and Deavon Richards brought out the IMCA Sport Compacts next with third-starting Shawn Cooney taking the lead right away. D. Richards did all he could to track him down, but Cooney was too strong and went on to take the win, his second of the year. D. Richards was second with L. Richards third and Jodie Maben fourth. Maben was the heat race winner.
After three great heat races where Jeff Joldersma, Jamie Schirm and Bob Daniels picked up the wins, the IMCA Stock Cars took to the track for the second annual Stew Hansen Dodge/Jeep Stock Car Shootout and $1000 to win. Schirm and Marcus Fagan pulled out the first two chips to make up the front row. Fagan moved into the lead early with Schirm and then Joldersma second. Two early cautions bunched up the field, moving Joldersma and Damon Murty up to Fagan’s bumper. Joldersma moved up beside and then past Fagan on lap seven with Murty following into second on the next lap. Lap nine drew a red flag for Ty Hill as his car had the rear end come out and he rolled in turn three. Hill was ok, but his car was done for the evening. After the restart, Joldersma held strong at the front with Murty and Fagan tearing up the clay behind him. At times the top three were under a blanket with Murty up beside Joldersma and then Fagan as well. Lap fifteen saw Fagan move into second and set up a five lap shootout for the big money!! Fagan closed the gap and might have even had a shot to move Joldersma, but kept things clean and Joldersma went on to pick up the win, his first of the year. Joldersma also holds the distinction of being the only Stew Hansen Dodge/Jeep Stock Car Shootout winner as he won the inaugural race a year ago! Fagan crossed in second with Murty third, Josh Daniels fourth and Dustin Vis fifth.
We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track for night five of the season. Next week is Schneider Excavating Night at the Races. Mod Lites return with regular races for our normal classes. See you then!
