Aikey, Ryan score Dick Frye Memorial wins at Independence Motor Speedway
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 20) – The 2013 edition of the Buchanan County Fair came to a close Saturday night with the seventh annual Dick Frye Memorial at Independence Motor Speedway.
The event, which honors the memory of the late fair board president, welcomed 112 drivers to do battle during the 11th night of weekly points racing in front of a packed house.
In a car borrowed from Rick Dralle, Jeff Aikey drove the high side to victory in the 25-lap IMCA Late Model feature. Aikey passed Luke Pestka just shy of the midway point to score his first win of the season.
From his pole position start, Pestka held the early lead with Jon Passick and Rory Metcalf in pursuit. Pestka paced the field while Passick pestered the leader on the low-side of the speedway. The leaders battled for the top spot while Aikey raced into contention from a fourth row starting spot.
Aikey worked the high groove into the top five on the fifth circuit, then entered a battle with the leaders four laps later. Aikey shot past Passick at the 10-lap mark and then made his way into the lead on the following circuit.
Aikey diced his way through heavy lapped traffic to take his first win of the season ahead of a hard-charging Jason Rauen, who started in the sixth row. Pestka ran third.
Shawn Ryan earned his first win of the year in the Performance Bodies IMCA Modified division. After a pair of cautions slowed action early, Ryan made his way around Josh Sherbon to assume command on the third lap.
Ryan survived a few more stoppages, then held off Ronn Lauritzen to score the victory. Points leader Tyler Droste ran third in the 20-lapper.
Jesse Brown held the early lead in the 18-lap IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event. Brown showed the way until Jarod Weepie raced the low side into the lead following a lap four restart.
Weepie held the point while eighth starting John Emerson worked through traffic and pulled alongside Weepie in the waning laps. Emerson took charge when the flying green waved to score his sixth win of the season. Weepie and Justin Temeyer completed the top three.
Jeremiah Wilson took command on lap five of the 15-lap IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature. Wilson paced the field while Benji Irvine was charging through the pack from a sixth row start.
Irvine settled into second just prior to a lap five restart and remained in that position until mechanical problems sidelined Wilson with seven lap to go. Irvine inherited the lead for the ensuing restart and led the rest of the way to take his third win of the year. Justin Stander and Chris Luloff chased the points leader across the checkers.
A myriad of cautions slowed action in the scheduled 15-lap Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMod feature. The event timed out after nine laps, however Brandon Smith made the most of it as he led the event in its entirety to earn his first-ever win in the division. Dave Schulze and Curt Hilmer rounded out the top three.
Steve Miedke led the first three laps of the 12-lap Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact main event. Miedke gave way to Adam Gates on the fourth circuit as Gates cruised to his ninth win of the season. Miedke ran second ahead of Merv Chandler.
Next Saturday, July 27, is Dan Snyder Night at the speedway. Increased prize money will be available in the Modified and SportMod divisions as a tribute to the longtime engine builder, who is fighting Metastatic Esophageal cancer. Details of that event will be released early in the week.
