Waterman and Griffiths Go Back-To-Back at the Lee County Speedway
by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Friday, August 2, 2013) – Mother nature tried to put a damper on the racing action Friday at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA, but didn’t succeed. As it was Trump Trucks of Kahoka, MO, Hy-Vee of Fort Madison and Keokuk, IA, and Miller Lite night at the track. At the end of the nights activities Jeff Waterman (Budweiser IMCA Modifieds), and Dustin Griffiths (Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stocks) made it two wins in a row at the track, while John Oliver Jr. (Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Cars), Jim Gillenwater (Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMods), and Skipp Dunker (Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts) also claimed wins on the night.
The first feature up on the night was the 14 lap Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts, with Brent Hartley and Mike Hornung Jr. leading the field to the green flag. Hartley would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Chuck Fullenkamp and Michael Grossman. But the action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 2, as Kyle Hamelton’s machine came to a stop in turn 2 on fire to bring out the caution. On the restart Hartley jumped back out front, but now had Grossman close behind in second. Grossman would slip past Hartley on lap 5 to take over the top spot, leaving Hartley to battle with Fullenkamp and Skipp Dunker, who started 6th. The lead that Grossman built up over the battle for second would be erased on lap 9, as Alyssa Steele would spin in front of the field down the front stretch to bring out the yellow. On the restart Ron Kibbe, who started 10th and was up to 5th, jumped the restart to bring the yellow light back out. He was sent to the rear on the restart. But before the field was set to go back to green, Grossman pulled into the infield with troubles giving the lead over to Dunker. Dunker would pull away over the final 5 laps to claim his third win of the season at the track. Fullenkamp edged out a 2nd place finish, Hartley was 3rd, Kimberly Abbott was 4th, with Brandon Reu coming home in 5th.
Up next was the 15 lap Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stock feature, with Jason See and Doug Gorden drawing the front row for the event. See jumped out front on lap 1 over Gorden and Dustin Griffiths, and then held off those two drivers until the first and only caution of the event appeared on lap 7. Erick Knutsen would slow in turn 2 with fire under the hood to bring out the yellow. On the restart See moved back out front, but now had Griffiths all over his back bumper. Griffiths would try to get under See over the next 4 laps, but See would hold him off each lap. But then See bobbled in turn 2 on lap 12, which allowed Griffiths to go by on the top side to take over the lead. Griffiths then went on to lead the final 4 laps to pick up his second win in a row and fifth of the season at the track. See settled for 2nd, Nick Ulin came from 8th to finish in 3rd, Gorden was 4th, with Andrew Hustead rounding out the top 5.
Rodger Dresden and Dakota Simmons led the field to the green in the 20 lap Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMod feature, with Dresden grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Simmons and Jim Gillenwater, who started 6th. The action up front would be slowed for the first time on lap 3, as debris in turn 2 brought out the yellow. On the restart Gillenwater slipped under Dresden to grab the top spot on lap 3 and then started to pull away from the battle for second. Dresden, Dustin Crear, who started 8th, and Brett Lowry, who started 10th, had a great battle going for second when the second and final caution of the event appeared on lap 13. This time Tony Dunker, who started 18th and had worked his way up to 6th, spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Gillenwater once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Lowry, Crear, Bobby Anders, who started 9th, and Carter VanDenBerg, who started 11th, going at it for the second spot. But Gillenwater would pull away over the final 7 laps to claim his third win of the season at the track. Lowry won the battle for 2nd, Crear was 3rd, Anders 4th, with VanDenBerg coming home in 5th.
Up next was the 20 lap Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Car feature, with Les Blakley and Jim Lynch on the front row. Lynch would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over John Oliver Jr. and Jeremy Pundt. Oliver Jr. tied to get under Lynch over the next 7 laps, but Lynch was able to hold him off each time. But Oliver Jr. was able to make the pass into the lead on lap 5, leaving Lynch to hold back Pundt in the battle for second. The action up front would be slowed for the first time on lap 10, as Gabe Harrison spun in turn 3 to bring out the caution. On the restart Jake Wenig, who started 7th and was up to 4th, spun in turn 3 and collected the car of Jerry Jansen to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Oliver Jr. jump back out front, with Lynch, Pundt and Abe Huls, who started 6th, battling it out for second. Pundt’s run up front came to a stop on lap 14, as he spun in turn 3 to bring out the final caution of the event. Once again Oliver Jr. jumped out front on the restart, with Huls grabbing the second spot. Oliver Jr. would hold off Huls over the final 6 laps to pick up his third win of the season at the track. Huls was 2nd, Lynch was 3rd, Corey Strothman came from 13th to finish in 9th, with Dan Wenig coming from 10th to round out the top 5.
The final feature up on the night was the 20 lap Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, with Michael Browning and Levi Smith leading the field to the green flag. Smith would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Browning and Brandon Ruffcorn. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 2, as Brandon Rothzen spun in turn 2 to bring out the caution. On the restart Smith jumped back out front, with Jeff Waterman, who started 5th, slipping past Browning for second. But the action up front was slowed for the second and final time on lap 4, as Colin Rothzen spun in turn 3 to bring out the yellow. Once again Smith moved out front on the restart, with Waterman close behind in second. Waterman would try to get under Smith over the next 4 laps, but Smith was able to hold him off each time. Smith would drift to high going into turn 3 on lap 9, which allowed Waterman to slip under him for the top spot. Waterman then led the final 11 laps to claim his second win in a row at the track. Smith had a great run in 2nd, Brandon Banks came from 11th to finish in 3rd, Bill Roberts was 4th, with Browning holding on for 5th.
