2013 Champions crowned at 34 Raceway

Schulz pulls out 305 sprint win and championship

BURLINGTON, IA (August 24, 2013) – 2013 34 Raceway season champions were crowned Saturday night, August 24 for all seven classes on Denny Woodworth Attorney at Law and JL Scrap Metals Fan Appreciation Night. Race fans filled the stands to see who would be the 2013 track champions. Dan the Man had the fans, adults and kids, compete in some fun games and then there was the dump truck unloading the nearly 7000 pieces of candy on the front stretch for the kid’s candy dash courtesy of Krieger Racing, Ron Wooldridge Trucking, Krieger Farms, Tony & Joanna Scott, Jim & JoAnn Costello, Roederer’s Pit Stop, Rich Adams, Nick Breuer, The Flying Farmer Andy Huston, Glenn Birky, and High 5 Racing adding to the fun.

When the night of racing was completed seven champions were crowned as the 2013 Season 34 Raceway Track Champions. 2013 34 Raceway Track Champions are Mark Burgtorf, Quincy, Il. (UMP Late Models), Mitch Morris, Eldridge, (IMCA Modifieds), John Schulz, West Burlington (305 sprints), Jason Cook, Mt. Pleasant, (IMCA Stock Cars), Bobby Anders, Quincy, Il. (IMCA Sport Mods), Wayne Noble, Wapello (4 cylinders), and Evan Epperson, Muscatine, (Mod Lites).

Mark Burgtorf, (Late Models) Mitch Morris (modifieds), John Schulz (305 sprints), Bobby Anders (sport mods) and Evan Epperson (Mod Lites) would not only get track championship honors but would also pick up feature wins in their divisions. Also getting wins would be Abe Huls (stock cars) and John Whalen (4 cylinders).

Coming Up this week will be two nights of racing action when the USAC Non-Wing 410 Sprints come to 34 Raceway on Friday night August 30. With no wings it will be just ruts and guts for these 410 racers as they fly around the 3/8 mile putting on a show you won’t want to miss. Also on the card will be the 305 sprints ($750 to win, $125 to start), and the IMCA Sport Mods ($500 to win, $75 to start). Pit gates open at 3, grandstands 5 and qualifying to start at 7 p.m.

Then come back Saturday, August 31 for the f Midwest Power and Performance & Power Clash for Cash event with Quad, Pit Bikes and Side By Sides in their first ever stand alone event at 34 Raceway. Its just $5.00 grandstand admission so bring the family. There will be plenty of jumps, turns and thrills as they take on the 34 Raceway course.

Open B 14 & older , Pro Quad 14 & older- $200 to win. Side x Sides- 16 & older – $150. Bikes-

65 cc open – 6-12,
85-105cc 2 stroke 150cc 4 stroke – 8-14,
Open A- $200 to win,
Open B-
Pit Bikes 14 & older- $100 to win.
Abe Huls, Carthage, picked up the win in the IMCA Stock Car feature battling John Oliver early on before he was able to pull away at the end for his second win at 34, his first on March 30. Huls finished 21 points behind track champion Jason Cook who finished fifth in the sixteen car field.
Bobby Anders raced to his fifth IMCA Sport Mod feature win at 34 Raceway this year as well as winning the 2013 track championship. Anderson took the early lead from his front row start and pulled away from the field in the 15 lap feature. Sean Wyett followed to finish second. Anders took the track championship with a 26 point lead over Wyett.
The 4 Cylinders were up next with John Whalen getting his first 34 Raceway win topping the 22 car field. Whalen had to hold off a hard charging Austen Becerra taking the checkered flag by one car length ahead of Becerra. Wayne Noble would win the points battle with 551 points to win the 4 cylinder championship. Whalen followed with 529 points.
The 305 Sprint feature was the race people were talking about when John Schulz took the win in a thriller. Just six points separated Donnie Steward and Schulz following heat race action. Both started on the front row with the two taking the first green lap side by side. The two drivers put on a great show for the fans weaving through lap traffic, and exchange positions several times in the 19 car field. On lap nineteen of the twenty lap race, Shultz, who had been running low, took to the top side of the track where Steward had been running passing Steward taking the win and the track championship in an exciting finish. Schulz won the championship with a 7 point lead over Steward.
Mitch Morris won the IMCA Modified fifteen car feature as well as winning his first 34 Raceway track championship. Morris would hold off a charging Tyler Glass (who moved up from his 12th position start), to get the win by several car lengths. Dean McGee would get by Dennis LaVeine to finish third. Morris finished with a 39 point lead over Jeff Waterman to clinch the title.
Mark Burgtorf took the checkered flag in the UMP late model feature with oil leaking from his car as he pulls on to the scales to weight. After leading the first lap of the race, Burgtorf had to regain it from Denny Woodworth on lap eight and went on to pull away from the field. Jay Johnson closed in late in the race but Burgtorf would pull away again for the win and the 2013 Season Championship with 235 points, 50 points ahead of Woodworth.

Evan Epperson got a belated birthday present Saturday night taking the checkered flag for the win in the Mod Lite feature event. Epperson had already clinched the track championship in the mod lite division and ended the point season with a 60 point lead over Justin Buchholz. Epperson led the first three laps before giving it up to Collin Ball on lap four. Ball would lead the next four laps with Epperson on his tail. On the white flag lap, Epperson took the lead from Ball and went on to get his fourth win this year, a day after his 17th birthday.
