Marshalltown, Iowa (September 21,  2013)

As the season came to an end at the Marshalltown Speedway on Saturday night the race fans were left in awe and awaiting the 2014 version of the World Nationals.  A record 219 teams jammed into the pit area and thrilled the great racing fans all night long.

Pat Fagen led the first lap in the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Truck feature event but it was Bret Moyer taking the nod by lap three. Moyer slipped up on lap four and that allowed Fagen to get by just before the caution waived. On the restart, Moyer got by Fagen for the lead and never looked back despite a pair of cautions on lap five. Moyer took the win and the Dirt Truck Series Championship, Fagen came home second, Rick Clark was third, Paul Nagle, driving a Old Bugs Vincent truck came home fourth and Bryan Nevins Sr was fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature the caution waived for debris in turn four after several cars got together on the start. Austin Luellen jumped to the lead and the only thing that slowed him down was a caution on lap seven and then again on 11.  Luellen took the win over last night’s winner Jamie Songer, John Watson, Eric Stanton and Bill Bonnett.

Geoff Olson and Matt Lettow started on the front row in the Karl Chevrolet IMCA SportModfeature. Olson led the first 12 laps but as he started to encounter lap traffic that allowed Tony Dunker, who was able to get by Lettow for the second spot to take over the lead. Dunker and Olson battled it out but then the caution came out on lap 17 giving Dunker clean air. Dunker held off challenges from Olson, Lettow and in the end Doug Smith to take the win. Smith came home in second after starting eleventh, Lettow finished third, Geoff Olson fourth, and the previous night’s winner Carter VanDenBerg was fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars feature lived up to their name of the Class to Tough Tame as they ran 20 laps green-to-checkered. There was exciting all thru the field but eyes kept going back to the battle for the lead.  Damon Murty grabbed the top spot early but Beatrice, Nebraska’s Kyle Vanover got by Jordan Grabouski for second before setting his sights on getting the lead from Murty on lap six. Murty and Vanover battled it out until the end, but it was Vanover cashing in the $1,000 payday.  Murty, Green Bay’s John Heinz, Donavon Smith and Andy Altenburg round out the top five.

The final feature of the night was the World Nationals 50 lap Modified feature presented by PBM, Erson, and World Products.   This feature did not disappoint as there was great three and four wide racing all thru the field. Adam Larson and Jacob Murray battled hard for the lead. Adam Larson would lead the first two laps before the caution waived when Richie Gustin came to a stop on the backstretch. Murray was able to get by Larson for the lead on lap nine as the two cars fought door to door just inches apart.  Larson grabbed it back on lap 13 before they swapped the lead two more times before the second caution on lap 16.  Murray then checked away as there was a fierce battle between five cars for the second spot.  Jeremy Mills started tenth and  worked his way to a runner up finish only to break a J-bar on the last lap.  Darin Duffy came out of a last chance heat and started 14th to finish third,  Brian Mullen of Seymour, WI finished in fourth and Larson rounded of the top five.

Just before the start of the World Nationals fans were on the edge of their seat waiting to see who would take home the 2013 Larry Shaw rolling chassis. It was Pam Peterson of Johnston, IA with the winning ticket.  The runner up won a 55” TV and that went home to Darrel Lehigh of Fisher, IL.  The third ticket drawn was Josh Daniels of Des Moines and he was awarded four tickets to the 2014 World Nationals.  A big thanks goes out to Larry Shaw, Performance Bodies, Bob Harris Enterprises, AFCO, Fast Shafts, BSB Manufactuing, Aero Wheels, Joe Gibbs Driven Oil, Chase Decals, Eibach, Millers Custom Powder Coating, and  SCS Fabrication for making the rolling chassis possible.  The additional money from ticket sales of gracious fans will  see the Wounded Warrior Foundation receiving a check for $3,340.

Thanks to all the great sponsors helping out with the World Nationals: Kirchners Machine, Sput’s Racing Engines, Harvey’s Automotive Machine, Tony’s Machine, Mullins Racing Engines; Tim’s Automotive & Machine, Schmidt Machine, KS Engineering, Midstate Machine, Grawmonbecks Engine Rebuilding, Speedway Illustrated, Webster City Machine, Smith Engine & Machine, Karl Performance, Fagen Racing/Layne Transmissions, Mahle Motorsports, RaceQuip Safety Equipment, High Velocity Heads, World Products, PBM Perfomance Products/Erson Cams, Driven Racing Oil, Federal Mogul, Edelbrock, EQ Cylinder Heads and Heartland Auto Racing Show.

That wraps up all the racing action at Marshalltown Speedway for 2013 Season but the Annual Salute to Champions Banquet will be coming on November 1st, 2013. Then things will kick in to high gear on April 4th for the Annual Frostbuster as next year will mark 50 years of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway.
