Memphis, MO (Friday, October 18, 2013) – Despite the cool temperatures, the racing action on the track during Night 1 of the Memphis Fall Nationals at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO more then made up for. In action on the night was the Modifieds, Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts.

The first feature up on the night was the 16 lap SportMods, with Logan Anderson and Mike Mundell drawing the front row for the event. Anderson would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Dave Wietholder and Jeff DeLonjay. The action up front was slowed on the completion of lap 1 when Brayton Carter, Tony Johnson, Tyler Heckart and Josh Larson collided in turn two to bring out the caution. On the restart Jamie Songer would spin in turn 1 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Wietholder slip past Anderson to grab the top spot away on lap 2. But just after the completion of lap 2, the yellow light would come on. This time John Anderson, Jared Miller and Carter collided in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Mundell would spin in turn 3 on the restart to bring the caution back on. On the following restart Wietholder moved back out front, but now had Curtis Van Der Wal, who started 12th, on his back bumper. Van Der Wal would jump to the outside of Wietholder on lap 4 to take over the top spot, leaving Wietholder to battle Anderson, Scott VanBuskirk, who started 7th, and Jim Gillenwater, who started 10th, for the runner up spot. Van Der Wal looked to be heading to the win, until the final caution came out on lap 14 to set up a green-white-checkered finish. Miller would slow down the front stretch to bring out the yellow. On the restart Van Der Wal jumped back out front, with Wietholder, Gillenwater and VanBuskirk working on him for the top spot. But Van Der Wal would hold on for the final two laps to claim the $500 top prize. Wietholder won the battle for 2nd, Gillenwater was 3rd, VanBuskirk was 4th, with Anderson holding on for 5th.

Mike Hornung Jr. and Cory Flanigan led the field to the green flag in the 12 lap Sport Compact feature, but it was third place starter Adam Gates who grabbed the lead on lap 1. Gates started to pull away from the field, as Merv Chandler, who started 8th, was working his way to the front. Chandler would move into second on lap 3 and then went to work on cutting into Gates’ lead. By the half way point Chandler was able to close in on Gates’ back bumper. On lap 10 Chandler slid up in front on Gates to grab the top spot away. But Gates would us the same move coming to the white flag to grab the lead back. Gates then held off Chandler over the final lap to pick up the $200 top prize. Chandler settled for 2nd, Josh Modde came from 6th to finish in 3rd, Chuck Fullenkamp was 4th, with John Whalen finishing in 5th after starting in 11th.

Up next was the 18 lap Stock Car feature, with Abe Huls and Louis Lynch making up the front row. Just as the green flag was waved the yellow light would come on, as Jake Powers and Corey Stout collided in turn. On the following restart Lynch would jump out front to lead lap 1 over Jason Cook and Cayden Carter. The two and three wide action up front was slowed on lap 3, as Jim Lynch stopped in turn 2 with left front troubles to bring out the caution. Lynch once again moved back out front on the restart, with Cook, Nathan Wood and Carter battling for second. The two and three wide racing up front was slowed on lap 7, as Jay Hayes spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Cook would use the bottom of the track to grab the lead on lap 8, with Carter over taking Lynch to move into second. Cook’s lead only last for 1 lap, as Carter jumped to the top of the track to grab the top spot on lap 9. Just as the top five cars started racing two and three wide, the final caution of the event appeared on lap 14. This time Hayes would spin in turn 1 for his second solo caution to end his night. Carter jumped back out on the restart, with Lynch, Cook, Wood and Jason Rold battling for the runner up spot. Carter would hold on for the final 4 laps to pick up his first career Stock Car feature win and claimed the $500 top prize. Lynch won the battle for 2nd, Wood was 3rd, Cook was 4th, with Rold coming home in 5th.

Brandon Symmonds and Mike Hughes drew the front row for the 14 lap Hobby Stock feature, with Hughes jumping out into the lead on lap 1. Hughes would hold the top spot until lap 3, when Derek Kirkland slipped under him to grab the lead away. But just like Hughes, Kirkland would only lead 2 laps, as Jason Fusselman used the top of the track to edge out the lead on lap 5. Kirkland wouldn’t give up that easy though, as he came back on the bottom to take the top spot back on lap 6. While Kirkland held a small lead Fusselman, Hughes, Bill Bonnett, Jason Keiser, who started 10th, and Corey Madden battled two and three wide for the second spot. The battle up front was slowed for the first time on lap 8, as a tire was pushed out onto the track in turn 2. On the restart Kirkland moved back out front, with Bonnett over taking Fusselman for second. Fusselman wasn’t happy battle for the runner up spot, as he slipped past Kirkland on lap 10 to take the lead. The two and three wide action up front was slowed for the second and final time on lap 11, as a tire was pushed onto the track in turn 3 to bring out the caution. On the restart Madden slipped under Fusselman to grab the top spot on lap 12. Madden then held on over the final 3 laps to claim the win and the $300 top prize. Keiser came from 5th on the final restart to finish in 2nd, Dustin Griffiths came from 15th to finish in 3rd, Hughes was 4th, with Fusselman coming home in 5th.

The final feature of the night was the 20 lap Modifieds, with Kyle Brown and Dakota Hayden drawing the front row for the event. Hayden would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1. Hayden starting pulling away from the field, when the first caution of the race appeared on lap 8. On the restart Cayden Carter used the bottom of the track to slid up in front of Hayden to grab the lead on lap 9. Carter then started to pull away from the battle for second, when another caution came out on lap 13. This time Bruce Hanford lost some fluid down the front stretch to bring out the yellow. On the restart Carter jumped back out front, with Hayden working to hold back Ronn Lauritzen, who started 14th, in the battle for second. The action up front was slowed for the third time on lap 15, as Tyler Shaw spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Once again Carter moved back out front, with Brown using the bottom of the track to go from 5th to second. But just as Brown went to work on Carter for the top spot, the caution would appear for the final time on lap 16. This time Matt Gilbertson spun in turn 4 and collected Casey Greubel to bring out the yellow. On the restart Brown used the bottom of the track to slid past Carter for the lead on lap 17. But Carter wouldn’t give up, as he used the top of the track to grab the lead back on lap 19. Carter then held on to pick up his second win on the night and claimed the $600 top prize. Hayden came back to finish in 2nd, Brown held on for 3rd, Lauritzen was 4th, with Jerry Pilcher rounding out the top 5.
