Larry McFee Trucking Night at the Races at I-35 Raceway
WINSTON, MO (April 19, 2014) – Grand Nationals got the racing action rolling as “The Sensation” Austin Johnson #98 would use the high side to hold off heat race winner Buz Kaster #54. Johnson would hold the lead the entire race on his way to victory with a side by side finish with “The Alien” Don Marrs #9, mounting a late race charge to finish second by a fender. Pole sitter “Wamba” Buz Kaster would fade late to place third with “Biggen” Marty Powell #9p rounding out the field.
The USRA Hobby Stocks witnessed three wide racing action. Gary Ainsworth #83 would jump out to an early lead fending off #34 Mich Ross as they would race side by side for most of the feature. While these two were busy racing each other Billie Hoover #21h would use the extreme high side passing both drivers in turn four on his way to earing the night’s top spot. Ross would maintain his consistency but would have nothing for Hoover in the late laps to finish second. Heat race winner Tim Dawson #24, newcomer to I-35 Speedway, would flex his muscle with a solid third place finish. Early race leader Ainsworth showed continuing improvement but would fade late to place fourth. Another newcomer to our Hobby Stock class Tim Pettibone #47 would come home fifth.
Seeing their first action of the 2014 season at I-35 Speedway saw a familiar face in victory lane for the Show-Me Vintage Racers. As “Big” Mike McDowell #24 would hold off all challenges for his second ever feature win, at the young age of 57. Jim Clevenger #66 and Damon Clevenger #6 would have a family battle royal, with Jim placing second and Damon third. Brian “Bump” Strong #711 would place fourth, with the fancy 1957 Chevy of Elmer Gerloff #34 all the way from Wisconsin finishing fifth. Heat Race winners were Mickey Fleethart #7 and Brian Strong #711.
In a caution plagued feature that was shortened due to time constraints, witnessed Chad Clancy #21c pick up victory number two in the USRA B-Mod class at I-35 Speedway this young 2014 racing season. In a tale of two worlds it was almost as different as night and day between those in the top ten and those on the outside. It seemed as if the back half of the field was running a different feature event to bring out continued cautions. When the smoke had finally settled and green flag racing prevailed, up front action was fast and furious. Clancy used the breaks he needed as Gene Claxton #42 and Randy Ainsworth #57 would battle side by side for nearly every lap with Doug Keller #7k waiting for one chance to advance. When the checkers were shown Claxton was second, Ainsworth third, and Keller a solid fourth. “Mr. Excitement” Jim Cameron #96c would live up to his nickname charging through the field to finish fifth. Heat race winners were Mike Higley #11, Lynn Starry #54, Gene Claxton #42, and Chad Clancy #21c.
Always the most competitive and exciting feature the entertaining USRA Stock Cars would go green white to checkers once again. “Big” Jeff Dixon after picking up the earlier heat race win would use the front row starting spot to take the early advantage. Spectators could throw a blanket over the entire field as racing action heated up on the track. “Hollywood” Dean Wray #77 would search high and low but could not find a way around the speedy Dixon. Just when it appeared that the winner would be Dixon, out of nowhere charged Thomas Roberts #65x from third to first in route to picking up feature win number three on the season. Dixon driving a near flawless race would place second, moving Wray to third. Shawn Lee #4d starting shotgun on the field would be the hard charger of the feature as he would battle his way to fourth. “The Hulk” Jake Cameron #86C would race his way to another consistent top five finish.
USRA Modified racing action would witness Zach Sanders #69 become a two time winner in this young 2014 season. Darren Shaw #11, in his 2014 debut, would finish second by a fraction of an inch over 2013 Track Champion Steven Glenn #26s with great side by side action in a drag race to the checkers. With Glenn third, “Big Daddy” Dennis Elliott #29 would show what champions are made of as he would place a solid fourth. Young gun Trevor Hunt #99h would be impressive again as he would race his way to finish fifth. Heat race winners were Zach Sanders and Steven Glenn.
