Aikey takes Hoker Trucking East Series win at Davenport

DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 26, 2020) – Jeff Aikey captured his first Iowa Governor’s Cup title, Saturday night at the Davenport Speedway. The Super Late Model Racing Hoker Trucking East Series was the featured class at the 27th running of the stock car championship of Iowa. Over one hundred and fifty cars took part in the event.
Aikey took the lead from Richie Gustin on lap 14 of the 40-lap main and quickly pulled away to a straightaway lead. Aikey would go unchallenged the remainder of the race. Series point leader Tad Pospisil took second with Gustin holding on for third. Matt Ryan was credited with fourth and Jeff Tharp fifth.
Late Model heat race wins went to Tharp, Pospisil, Andy Eckrich, and Ray Guss Jr. Nick Marolf and Darrel DeFrance won the B-mains. Dave Eckrich set the pace in qualifying with a time of 14.772 seconds.
In Modified action, Spencer Diercks continued his winning ways. Diercks came from seventh starting position to claim victory. Eric Barnes finished second with Bryce Garnhart third. Eleventh place starter Ryan Duhme came home fourth, just ahead of Brandon Durbin in fifth.
Kyle Olson dominated the SportMod feature. The Cedar Rapids racer led every lap of the race. Shane Paris rode the high side to a second place finish with Logan Veloz right behind. Tyler Soppe and Tony Olson rounded out the top five.
The caution-riddled Street Stock feature belonged to Jeff Struck. Tony VonDresky was able to pass Struck early in the race, but Struck returned the favor a lap later. VonDresky held on to second, followed by Robert Cottom, Cary Brown, and Jeffrey Peterson, in that order.
Cyle Hawkins chalked up another win in 4-Stock competition. Tommy Staggs finished second and Dustin Forbes was third. Tim Sibley and Shawn McDermott completed the first five finishers.
Bruce Yoerger captured the American Iron Racing Series feature. Yoerger held off Dan Kessler to take the win. Owen Hayes, RJ Lank, and Brian Stock finished third through fifth respectively.
