Back-to-School Night August 17 at Independence Motor Speedway
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (August 12, 2013) – Parents of children preparing for the upcoming school year will have the chance to check school supplies off their to-do list Saturday night at Independence Motor Speedway.
The first 50 kids through the gate August 17 will receive a backpack full of school supplies during Back-to-School Night at the Races. A number of bicycle giveaways are also planned for the evening.
Saturday’s program is the final weekly event prior to the August 24 Budweiser Season Championships. Track championships will be wrapped up in all six divisions August 24.
Entering this weekend, Tyler Bruening is approaching his third IMCA Late Model title in the last four seasons in Independence. He carries a 34 point lead over Jon Passick entering the final two events. Darren Ackerman is 37 points out in third.
First-year Performance Bodies IMCA Modified driver Tyler Droste is seeking his first career track championship in the division. Droste holds a 16-point lead over Ronn Lauritzen. J.D. Auringer sits 32 points back in third.
Sean Johnson is hoping to wrap up his third straight track championship in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division. Johnson is one of three drivers separated by 10 points at the top of that division’s standings. John Emerson is seven points behind the leader and Jarod Weepie is 10 points back in third.
Two drivers seeking their first championship on the Independence oval have been neck-and-neck throughout the last half of the season in the Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMod division. Alex Zwanziger and Brennen Chipp have swapped the points lead four times in the last five weeks. Zwanziger holds a two point edge entering Saturday’s program.
Benji Irvine leads Chris Luloff by 27 points in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock standings. Irvine, who has not finished outside the top four in 14 nights of racing, is seeking his first points championship in Independence.
Merv Chandler holds the biggest lead entering the closing weeks of the season. He carries a 50 point lead over A.J. Witten in the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compact division. A track title would be Chandler’s second straight in the division.
Gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday, with hot laps at 6 and racing to follow. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $7 for students ages 12-17. Kids 11 and under are admitted free if accompanying a paid adult. Pit passes are $25.
