Banks, Livezey and Delzell Score First Wins of the Season at CJ Speedway
Columbus Junction, IA (Friday, June 17, 2016) – Another Friday night meant it was another night for racing at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, IA, with this weeks action being presented by Buckman’s Oasis and Louisa Communications. At the end of the night there would be three new winners and three repeat winners standing in victory lane.
The first feature to take to the track on the night was the 8 lap Kemper Trucking CJ Mini Haulers, with Drake Fenton and Jerad Ruble leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was third place starter Jason Delzell who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Jacob Brown, who started 5th, and Brian Tipps. Brown tried to work under Delzell, and even tried the top side a few times, for the next 6 laps, when a caution appeared to slow the action. On the restart Delzell moved back out front and then held off Brown over the final 2 laps to pick up his first win of the season. Brown was 2nd, Tipps was 3rd, Ruble was 4th, with Fenton coming home in 5th.
Up next was the 12 lap Tyson Fresh Meats SportMod feature, with Troy Philpott and Colton Livezey drawing the front row for the event. Livezey would take advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Philpott and Jared Miller. Philpott would follow in Livezey’s tire tracks the entire race. But without a caution Livezey would go on to lead all 12 laps to claim his first win of the season. Philpott settled for 2nd, Miller was 3rd, with Josh Drayfahl finishing 4th.
John Whalen and James Roose led the field to the green in the 12 lap Louisa Communications IMCA Sport Compact feature. But it was third place starter Jake Benischek who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Whalen and Roose. While Benischek set the fast pace out front, Adam Gates, who started 8th, was working his way towards the front. At the halfway point of the race Gates would climb into the runner up spot and then went to work on chasing down Benischek for the lead. But without a caution to bunch the field up, Benischek would hold on to pick up his second win in a row at the track. Gates settled for 2nd, Josh Mosier came from 6th to finish 3rd, Daniel Campbell was 4th, with Bill Whalen Jr. coming from 12th to round out the top 5.
Up next was the 10 lap Mod Lite feature, with Gary Snyder and Michael Dominguez making up the front row. But Wyatt Wilkerson, who started third, jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Snyder and Collin Ball, who started 5th. Brad Lucy and Ball were closing in on Wilkerson to make it a three car battle for the lead, when the two got together in turn 2 on lap 7 to bring out the caution. On the restart Wilkerson moved back out front, with Dominguez and Lucy close behind. Wilkerson would lead the final three laps to claim his second win of the season at the track, and also broke Lucy’s three race win streak. Lucy would recover from the spin to come back up to finish 2nd, Dominguez was 3rd, Snyder was 4th, with Ball coming home in 5th.
Brandon Banks and Johnathan Huston drew the front row for the 15 lap P&L Transportation Modified feature, with Banks taking advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Huston and Steve Stewart. By lap 3 Stewart and Andrew Schroeder slipped past Huston to claim the second and third spots, and then went to work on Banks for the top spot. But without a caution to bunch the field up, Banks would go on to lead all 15 laps to pick up his first win of the season at the track. Stewart was 2nd, Schroeder was 3rd, Huston was 4th, with Dan Albright rounding out the top 5.
The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 15 lap Kauffman Electric IMCA Stock Cars, with Travis Finke and Billy Faler leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Finke would take advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Faler and Tad Payne, who started 6th. Disaster would strike Finke on lap 7, as he slowed down the front stretch with mechanical troubles to bring out the yellow. On the restart Payne grabbed the lead, with Kirk Kinsley, who started 8th, and Adam Bell, who started 7th, following close behind. Bell would over take Kinsley for the runner up spot on lap 9 and then went to work on Payne for the lead. Bell tried to work under Payne over the next 5 laps, but Payne was able to hold him off. Then coming out of turn four for the checkered flag Bell got into Payne, with Payne spinning. As a results Kinsley was awarded the win, which was his third of the season at the track. Jason Hartman was 2nd, Dane Fenton came from 9th to finish in 3rd, Shane Paris was 4th, with Faler coming home in 5th.
