Baumli and Bowers Continue to Add Wins at Bethany Speedway

| August 3, 2020

The historic Bethany Speedway was one of only a handful of tracks in action this weekend in the northern part of Missouri. The heat stayed away and provided some of the best racing weather we’ve had all year. And the track had a little bit of everything for every driver. It was smooth, fast and racy all night. Valor Racing helped bring in the NonWing Sprint Cars for an unsactioned race. Pits were full and many fans made for a great, family fun, night at the races.

The Pure Stocks were up first. 14 cars were slated to start the feature. The same as he’s done for the last few weeks, #B/5 George Bruning, shot to the lead to make sure everybody had to pass him for the win. Again hitting his marks every lap. But #11s Tyler Starmer had followed him quickly to the front. As Bruning was running the bottom, Starmer drove around the outside and to the lead. Brunning then started getting pressure on the bottom from current points leader, #18k Kasey Ayres, and on the outside from last weeks feature winner #20x Nate Barnes. Lap after lap Bruning and Barnes wet back and forth for second. Ayres drifted back just a little while Starmer went on to win his second feature at Bethany and third this year. Barnes had cleared Bruning for second at the line. #38 Nick James had flirted wih the top five all race and finished fourth. Ayres protects his lead by finishing fifth. All five of those drivers are in the top 6 in points.

With 26 Emods checked in, it took a B feature to narrow the A feature field down. At the drop of the green flag, #2x Jeremiah Asher took command. #5k Keith Simmons found himself in second and taking shots at Asher. Several guys spent the race gaining positions after starting midpack. After a DQ, the back half of the top five were shuffled. Asher took the win with Simmons second. #74 Justin Asher finished third after starting outside the top ten. #3H Tyler Harrill, one of our youngest drivers, continues to get faster and finished fourth. #742 Brandon Beam came from 12th to fifth.

The IMCA Sportmod class had a good count of 14 cars. This class seems to be a who’s who of winners this year. Several guys looking to pick up their scond win at Bethany this season. #211 Tim Eaton quickly moved himself up and into the lead. #T25 Tim Stallbaumer would not let him get away. Stallbaumer was working the bottom while Eaton worked the top. When Stallbaumer showed his door to Eaton on the inside, Eaton moved down to take Stallbaumers line away. They continued to battle for the lead as a handful of cars raced for third behind them. #81 Austin Charles got turned around on lap one. He restarted at the back, but became one of those cars battling. One by one Charles picked off cars on his way to the front of that pack. The checkered came out with Charles on the move, but running out of laps to have a shot. Eaton gave himself a great birthday present with a feature win. Stallbaumer was second with Charles third. #112 Koby Rigsby keeps running stronger and getting closer to the front, this week in fourth. #007 Zach Nitsch finished fifth.

Valor Racing helped bring the NonWing Sprints in for a rare nonsanctioned race. It was put together in about three days. Eight sprints singed in. #12 Wesley Smith had one feature win in his career going into the night. And it came at Bethany Speedway in June. From the drop of the green Smith was on a rail, shaving the top of the cushion off the corners most of the race. Smith picked up his second win. #41 Brad Wyatt, #65 Chris Parkinson, #2H Luke Howard and #18 Terry Richards Jr rounded out second thru 5th in that order.

The IMCA Stock Carshad a rough start. Early in the race a car got sideways up on the cushion and spun down across the track. It collected five cars and thinned the feature out to eight cars. #20x Carson Masoner led a few laps. Then #292 Blake Peeler took the lead and tried to get away from everybody. But #46 JJ Baumli had visions of winning another feature this year. Baumli drove to the outside as Peeler stayed stuck to the bottom. #93 Sam Scott was rebounding from restarting at the back. Baumli picked up win number three out of five this year. Peeler had a strong run finishing second in only his fourth race back out this year. Scott was third. #21x Jon Boller Jr was fourth and #47x Connor Masoner fifth.

The IMCA Modified had 14 cars checked into the pits. One guy has taken control of the modified class as he’s chasing an IMCA National championship. #77 Steven Bowers Jr has won all but one feature at Bethany this year heading into the night. At the start #55D Mike Dotson took the point and battled #33 Nicholas Carpenter who ran just behind him. Bowers started tenth and was working thru the pack. And bringing #7 Shayne Bailey with him. Carpenter and Bowers ran behind Dotson. Out of turn two Bowers and Carpenter split Dotson high and low and ran it three wide all the way down the backstretch and into three. Bowers came out with the lead and went on to win with Carpenter in second and Dotson third. Bailey ran out of time and finished fourth. And #19x Josh Munsen marked another top five and good run in his rookie season.

Next race will be August 22nd with IMCA Sprint Cars, IMCA Modified, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sportmod, Pure Stock and Emod. Sweet Baby B’s food truck will be on hand supplying food you can usually only get at a fair or festival. We will have giveaways, box seats for your comfort, plenty of room for social distancing and family fun for everybody with covered grandstands at the historic Bethany Speedway.

Also, stay tuned for more information on the races coming up Labor Day weekend on September 5th and 6th. Saturday racing will be the IMCA Modified, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sportmod and the Mo-Kan Nationals for the Emod and Pure Stock classes. Then Sunday the NonWing Sprint Cars, Bmod/Sportmod Clash, and again, the Mo-Kan Nationals for the Emod and Pure Stock.
