Brett Heeter Runs Away with the Gary Davis Super 66 Stock Car Race; Shaw, Royalty, Mercer, Wells and Willard also Find Victory Lane at I-35 Speedway
WINSTON, Mo. (June 16, 2018) – The second annual Gary Davis Super 66 Stock Car race at I-35 Speedway brought a full crowd and full field to the racetrack. 31 stock cars checked in to fight for the $3,000 payday. Matt West, Abe Huls, Derrick Agee and Brett Heeter all started their nights off right, picking up heat race wins and locking themselves into the feature. 12 other drivers transferred directly out of the heats into the 30-lap main event. Unfortunately for 15 drivers, they had to run the B Feature to fight for the final eight spots. Last chance races are wild and the race saw several yellows for incidents right around the eighth spot. After 10 laps, Butch Bailey won the race, transferring into the feature, along with seven other drivers.
Outside pole-sitter Abe Huls took the early lead from Brett Heeter in the main event and paced the first 10 laps of the race. Several yellows flew for single car incidents during that time. On the ensuing restart, Abe Huls stepped over the cushion in turn two handing the lead to Brett Heeter. Heeter pulled away to a comfortable lead during the longest green flag run of the race. Jesse Brown and Derrick Agee battled for the second position while Jason Estes and Abe Huls battled for fourth. Other drivers started to fade while others charged during the green flag run. Jaylen Wettengel started in the 14th position and found himself fighting for a top five when the caution flew on lap 22.
Several more cautions plagued the last eight laps, one for third place contender Derrick Agee. Although, nothing fazed Heeter and on the last green flag run he left no doubts, holding off all challengers and winning the Gary Davis Super 66 Stock Car Race and the $3,000 check. Jason Estes finished the race second, while Abe Huls fought back for third. Jaylen Wettengel finished fourth, Donavon Nunnikhoven fifth, Matt West sixth and Dean Wray seventh. Blake Peeler passed the most cars picking up the hard charger, finishing the highest up of those that ran the B Feature. Kevin Anderson and Jerry Schmidt rounded out the top ten.
Although the Stock Cars were the featured class, five other features took to the track earlier in the night. In the USRA Modifieds, Darren Shaw used a front row starting position and every bit of the cushion possible to hold off a hard charging Dennis Elliott to win his first race of the 2018 season. Elliott finished second with Derrick Hicks third. Mark Schafman finished fourth in his first appearance at I-35 Speedway this season and Manlee Lamar finished fifth.
The USRA B-Modifieds saw a new winner at the track as Patrick Royalty dominated the race, leading all 15 laps. The other 19 cars all battled for second as Royalty had too much muscle for everyone else. Dustin Crist looked impressive on his way to a second-place finish. Eddie Schwope Jr. finished third, Ed Noll fourth and Daniel Harris fifth.
The E-Modifieds saw another dominating performance from Chris Mercer on his way to his fifth win of the season. Jessie Mulich finished second after battling back from an early race spin. Bobby Lopez finished third, Adam Schelert fourth and Josh Adkins fifth.
In the Pure Stocks, Beau Wells finally put everything together and won his first feature of the year. Several times, Wells looked to be headed to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle only to have it slip away late. Cody King tried to do the same thing tonight as he pounded Wells’ bumper. Wells did not flinch and picked up the win this week. King finished second, Ron Hill third, Kerry Ayers fourth and Greg Gilbert fifth.
The Sport Compacts ran a clean race after a red flag on the initial start and John Willard picked up the win. Alvin Cooney finished second, while Dave Petty Jr., Colby Acheson and Bradley Yont rounded out the top five.
