Budweiser Mid-Season Championships this Saturday at Independence Motor Speedway
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (June 24, 2013) – Mid-Season Championships presented by Budweiser will take center stage Saturday, June 29 at Independence Motor Speedway. The annual event that signifies the midway point of the racing season will feature a new and unique qualifying format for the six weekly divisions.
The new procedure will combine the traditional mid-season format of lining drivers straight-up based on season point totals with the weekly qualifying invert format.
Heat race lineups will be inverted, but not staggered, based on season point totals. This will allow the top points earners through the first half of the season to compete head-to-head in their qualifiers to determine their starting spots at the front of their respective features.
For instance, if 24 cars sign in to compete in a specific division, three heat races of eight cars would be scheduled. One heat would include the top eight drivers in the standings in attendance inverted based on their season point totals. Those eight drivers would be locked into starting spots in the first four rows of the feature regardless how they finish in their qualifier, provided they take the green flag in their respective heat. The order they finish in the heat race would be how they line up in the first four rows of the feature.
Based on the same 24 car count, the ninth through 16th place drivers in total points in attendance would be inverted in a second heat. The finishing order of that event would determine starting spots nine through 16 for the feature. The same procedure would be used for the third heat to determine the starting order for the final rows.
Each division’s car count will determine the number of heats required for qualifying and the number of entrants in each heat. If B features are necessary, transfer positions into the feature will be awarded. The amount of transfers will depend on car counts for those divisions.
This format is designed to offer the points leaders the opportunity to start up front, but will also give fans their money’s worth by presenting a complete night of racing that includes qualifying.
All competitors are expected to arrive and check in with the scorers by the time heat race lineups are created at 6 p.m. in order to guarantee their heat race starting spots. Drivers will be required to take the green flag in their heat in order to be locked in to that heat’s block of feature starting positions. Drivers failing to start their heat will be forced to start at the tail of their respective feature.
Gates open at 4 p.m. on Saturday, with hot laps at 6 and racing to follow. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $7 for students 12-17. Kids 11 and under will be admitted free to the grandstands if accompanying a paid adult. Pit passes are $25.
