Burks Takes USAC Win, Snyder Conquers SSN, Fuqua, Nichols and Barnes also Winners
By: Jacob Blair
OSBORN, Mo. – A strong field of cars in all divisions checked in to race on a perfect weather night at US 36 Raceway. With two series of sprint cars on the card, the fans had plenty of on track action, and the racing exceeding expectations.
The USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association put on a stellar show throughout the 23-car field. Wesley Smith took the point early in the race and would hold the lead for a good portion of the event. With only one caution slowing the race two laps in, it was clear lapped traffic would play a role in deciding the final outcome.
Wyatt Burks made his move to the front late in the race as he chose the right lane in traffic and snuck away to make the trip to Westfall GMC Victory Lane. Cody Baker followed Burks through to finish second. Smith settled for third, holding off the hard charging Don Droud Jr., who finished fourth after starting 11th. Riley Kreisel completed the top five, finishing fifth.
The Sprint Series of Nebraska put on a fantastic show, as Toby Chapman, Jason Danley and Stuart Snyder would battle it out for the win. After two early cautions, the majority of the race went green. Chapman led early and looked to have the field covered, however Danley and Snyder kept him within a few car lengths.
With the long green flag run to the end, Chapman entered heavy lapped traffic. Making the correct lane choice in traffic proved pivotal as Snyder used it not only to move around Danley for second, but would also make the right decision in traffic to take the lead. Snyder led the remaining laps to earn the win. Chapman finished second with Danley in third. Tyler Drueke and Kenny Potter completed the top five.
The IMCA Modifieds took a couple tries to get going, but once they got in a rhythm, Shayne Bailey found himself pacing the field. While Bailey led, both Steven Bowers Jr. and Chad Andersen, Andersen leading by eight points in the championship battle, began their charge through the field.
Bailey worked the low side, with Bowers up high and Anderson lurking in third. At about the halfway point, Bowers began challenging for the lead. Meanwhile, Darren Fuqua, making his first start at US 36 this season, methodically had worked to the fourth position. Bowers, after running side-by-side with Bailey for two laps, took the lead right before the final caution of the race flew. On the restart, Fuqua moved to second and began his challenge on Bowers. As Fuqua reached Bowers quarter panel, mechanically failure put Bowers to the infield and Fuqua found victory lane. Bailey finished second and Andersen third. Mark Schafman moved up 15 positions to finish fourth, while Dustin Campbell charged from 18th to finish fifth.
The IMCA Stock Cars went clean and green, which didn’t stop Mike Nichols from storming through the field from a 12th place starting position, to pick up the win. He battled for several laps with early race leader Brad Whitney, before Whitney pulled pit side with an issue. Steve Starmer quietly moved up five spots to finish second. Blake Peeler also went plus five to finish third. Brad Labonte and Brad Derry completed the top five.
At the end of the night, the Stock Cars also ran the special Shocker Chassis Six Pack Shootout. Six drivers voted into the bracket style event by the fans, Mich Ross, JJ Baumli, Anthony Whitham, Brad Derry, Carson Masoner and Blake Peeler, put on quite the show to conclude the night. The double elimination format saw drivers have multiple opportunities to find their way into the championship battle. Baumli never saw the consolation side of the bracket and picked up the special event win, beating Mich Ross in the final race.
The Pure Stocks also never saw the yellow flag, which forced some drivers starting further back to make decisive moves. Nate Barnes would do so, passing seven cars to earn his second win of 2020. Tyler Starmer led briefly from his sixth starting position late in the race, before Barnes moved by. Starmer finished second, with DJ Barnes third, Anthony Persell fourth and Brandon Hoover fifth.
Up next at US 36 is a visit from the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on Saturday, August 29. The E-Modifieds will also be racing in a non-points event. Information and tickets for the race is available at https://worldofoutlaws.com/schedule/event-info/?event=229726.
