(Bill W) April 9, 2014 – After a solid clean run in his Sprint Invaders opener at 34 Raceway on March 30, Carson McCarl’s feature was anything but that last Saturday night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa.  After solid runs in his heat and the Dash, the Altoona, Iowa driver’s night ended in a tangle on the second lap of the feature aboard the Mastell Brothers Trailer Service #27.

Carson and his brother Austin, who serves as crew chief, were joined by mother, Lori, who provided moral support.  “I’m just really thankful to have my brother Austin with me right now,” says Carson.  “He doesn’t have a ride, so it’s just him and me.  We work really well together.  He really has his stuff figured out, and he had me hooked up all night at Donnellson.  I’m lucky to have a brother like him.”

Carson drew inside row two of his heat race and ran second to earn himself a spot in the Dash.  “We had a really good run there in the heat,” he says.  “With the Sprint Invaders you want to get into the top two in the heat to get in the Dash, and we were able to do that.”

Starting up front in the Dash, Carson had another strong run, finishing second.  “Russ (Hall) got me on the start there in the Dash,” he says.  “The car was working really well though, and we were able to hang onto second.”

The nineteen year old driver talked about the 3/8-mile oval in Donnellson.  “The track was really tricky,” says Carson.  “Turns one a two were slick all the way up to the fence.  Three and four were really different.  Especially in the heats, you could really honk it in there full tilt.  You had to really hit your marks and make sure you didn’t do that down in turn one.  Unfortunately, that’s what I did in the feature.”

Starting outside of row one, Carson was contacted by another car on the first lap.  Then he was involved in a tangle and ended upside down on lap two.  “I just a made a mistake there,” he says.  “It was disappointing, because the car was really good.  I don’t know if we would have had anything for Russ, but we definitely had a top three car.”

Carson talked about the incident.  “The start of the race was screwed up a little,” he says.  “Some of those guys were going crazy on the first lap.  I was following (Tony) Shilling in one and two and he spun in front of me.  I got into him.  That straightened him out, and may have made my right rear go down there the following lap.  Unfortunately, I got the worst of the whole deal.”

The team will take this weekend off before the Sprint Invaders get back underway, Wednesday, April 16th at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa.
