Carter dials up a winner at West Liberty
by Mike McGuire
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa (July 25, 2020) – The racing action was hot on a warm Summer evening at West Liberty Raceway. The main event was the Mod Time 2K, with $2,000 awaiting the winner of the Modified feature. Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa, took home the top prize, showing why he is one of the elite Modified drivers in the state of Iowa.
In the feature, Jarrett Brown rolled out to the early lead from the pole. Brown would hold the lead through the first thirteen laps. Fourth place starter Denny Eckrich moved into the lead on lap fourteen, before yielding to Cayden Carter one lap later.
Carter held a sizeable lead until the race’s only caution came at lap twenty-four. On the ensuing restart, Spencer Diercks went from third to battling Carter side-by-side for the lead. Carter would regain his momentum and drive away for the win. Diercks would place second, with Jarrett Brown taking third. Eckrich finished fourth, followed by Dakota Simmons.
SportMods were also eyeing the big money, with $1,000 on the line. Logan Anderson and Brayton Carter started on the front row. Anderson would lead all fifteen laps en route to the win. Carter stayed on his bumper throughout the race, finishing second. Tim Plummer came from mid-pack to take third. Ryan Walker and Matt Fulton rounded out the top five.
Stock cars were also in action on Saturday night. Johnny Spaw was able to out-distance David Brandies to win both the heat and feature races. Stan O’Brien finished third in both races.
Cody Staley captured the win in the 4-Stock feature. Cody VanDusen finished second with Brad Havel third.
The Nostalgic Stock Car Racing Club rounded out the racing program. Kurt Zimmerman dominated the feature leading flag to flag. Ray Guss Jr. came from deep in the field to finish second. Ben Hamburg, Mark Claeys, and Tom Honts finished third through fifth respectively.
The next race at West Liberty Raceway will be Saturday, August 8th, for the Mid-Summer Madness. Saturday, August 22nd, brings the Malvern Bank Super Late Model – Hoker Trucking East Series to West Liberty for some high-speed, half-mile Late Model action.
