Carter Takes Two, One By Inches In SIS Racing Action

| July 12, 2019

Oskaloosa, Iowa: Bill & Ray’s Truck Repair hosted Wednesday nights racing action at the Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Speedway. The racing action provided a night of wild thrilling racing action on a perfectly prepared racing surface.

Oskaloosa’s Cayden Carter scored two feature wins on the night with the finale of the evening leaving the crowd buzzing with the finish that they had just witnessed. The Midstate Machine Stock Car feature saw Carter move the “Orange Crush” from his outside second row start into the lead early and it appeared that Carter would cruise on to the win. This was not to be the case as Sigourney driver Nathan Wood had other ideas and would provide Carter with challenge after challenge as the race wound down. The two hot shoes traded the lead lap after lap the last several circuits. As the white flag waved the two were in a near dead heat for the lead. The last lap saw the two race all the way around the Mahaska County Monster ½ mile with neither able to gain an advantage. At the finish line it was a photo finish with Carter scoring the win by mere inches over Wood. Jason McDaniel continues to impress in his rookie season by turning in a solid third place run.

The Oskaloosa Quality Rental Sportmod feature took the green with Logan Anderson shooting into the race lead form his outside front row start. Anderson appeared to have the field covered on Wednesday night, but it was not meant to be for him as Cayden Carter made a late race charge in a car that he was shaking down for the owner. Lap 14 of the 16 lap feature saw Carter overtake Anderson for the lead and go on to hold off Anderson for the win. Curtis VanDerWal crossed under the checkers in third.

Dustin Griffiths advanced from a sixth position start to score the win in the 14 lap Parker Tree Service Hobby Stock feature. Griffiths fought off the late race challenges by Derek Kirkland in getting to the checkers first.

Trent Orwig continued his strong 2019 racing season by scoring another feature win in the Autocrafters Sport Compact feature. Orwig took a hard fought victory over another driver having a great season in Oskaloosa’s Brandon Allison.

Jonathan Hughes scored the feature win in the Wingless Sprint Car 10 lap feature event. Hughes took command early and went on to the win ahead of Doug Sylvester.

In early Sprint Car heat racing, Chuck Graves rode out a very nasty flip, Graves was transported to the hospital in Oskaloosa before being transferred to Des Moines, no further details regarding Graves condition were available at the time of this writing.

The Southern Iowa Fair will be in full swing next week and the racing action will be headlined by the Caleb Hammond Memorial on Tuesday, July 16. Six Classes of cars will be in action with all classes racing for a greatly expanded purse thanks to a long list of sponsors. The five regular classes will be joined by the return of the Modifieds to the Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Speedway. The regular admission price of $8 for adults will be in effect for the Tuesday night race.
