Carter, Van Der Wal and Madden Sweep Memphis Fall Nationals
by Brian Neal
Memphis, MO (October 19, 2013) – Just like Friday night, the final night of the Memphis Fall Nationals at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, MO provided some great two and even three wide racing at times. At the end of the night Cayden Carter (Modifieds), Curtis Van Der Wal (SportMods) and Corey Madden (Hobby Stocks) would make a sweep of the weekend, while Zack VanderBeek (Stock Cars) and Brandon Lambert (Sport Compacts) also made it into victory lane.
The first feature up on the night was the 14 lap Sport Compacts, with Chuck Fullenkamp and Brandon Lambert drawing the front row for the event. Fullenkamp would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Lambert and Adam Gates. But Lambert was able to slip by Fullenkamp on lap 2 to take over the top spot, bringing Gates with him into second. Lambert then worked to hold back Gates for the lead over the next 5 laps. Gates was able to edge out front on lap 8, only to have Lambert come back on lap 9 to grab the top spot back. Lambert then held off Gates over the final 5 laps to pick up the $300 top prize. Gates settled for 2nd, Fullenkamp was 3rd, Merv Chandler came from 9th to finish in 4th, with Austen Becerra finishing 5th after starting in 8th.
Up next was the 20 lap Stock Car feature, with Louis Lynch and Lane Kauffman leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was third place starter Zack VanderBeek who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Lynch and Cayden Carter. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 2, as debris on the track brought out the yellow. On the restart VanderBeek moved back out front, leaving Carter and Lynch to battle for the runner up spot. Just as the action up front was starting to heat up, another caution waved on lap 5. This time Kris Walker, who was running 9th, went for a spin to bring out the yellow. Once again VanderBeek jumped out into the lead on the restart, with Michael Jaennette and Carter going at it for the second spot. While VanderBeek paced the field out front, Nathan Wood, who started 17th, moved up to make it a four car battle for second on lap 10. But there was nothing to stop VanderBeek over the final 10 laps, as he went on to claim the $750 top prize. Carter won the battle for 2nd, Jaennette held on for 3rd, Wood was 4th, with Lynch coming home in 5th.
Jenae Gustin and Tyler Heckart drew the front row for the 18 lap SportMod feature. But debris on the track on the drop of the green flag would slow the action. On the restart the yellow light would come back on, as a no start brought out the caution. The third attempt of a start saw Gustin grab the lead on lap 1 over Carter VanDenBerg and Dave Wietholder. Gustin’s run up front only lasted one lap, as Curtis Van Der Wal slipped under her on lap 2 to take over the top spot. Just as Van Der Wal started to pull away from the field, another caution on lap 5 would bring them back to his back bumper. Dakota Simmons, Rodger Dresden and Brayton Carter who were battling for the 9th spot collided to bring out the yellow. On the restart Tony Johnson would spin to bring the yellow light back on. Another restart produced another yellow, as Jared Miller slowed to bring out the caution. Once back to green Van Der Wal moved back out front, with Wietholder, Heckart and VanDenBerg battling for second. Van Der Wal once again started to pull away from the battle for second, when the yellow light came on on lap 11. This time Josh Larson spun to bring out the caution. On the restart Van Der Wal moved back out front, with Wietholder working to hold back VanDenBerg in the battle for second. The action up front was slowed for the final time on lap 15, as Sean Wyett, who was running 7th, slowed with troubles to bring out the yellow. Van Der Wal jumped back out front on the restart, with VanDenBerg over taking Wietholder for second. Van Der Wal would hold on over the final 3 laps to pick up his second win on the weekend and claimed the $750 top prize that went with it. VanDenBerg was 2nd, Wietholder was 3rd, Logan Anderson came from 8th to finish in 4th, with Heckart taking home a 5th place finish.
Up next was the 16 lap Hobby Stock feature, with Tyson Overton and Doug Sylvester drawing the front row. But just as the green flag was waved the caution light would come on, as Overton, Mike Hughes and Aaron Owseiler collided to bring out the yellow. On the restart Corey Madden inherited the pole and would lead lap 1 over Jason Fusselman and Jason See. Madden would work to hold off Fusselman over the next 5 laps, as Jacob Keiser, who started 12th, and Hughes were working there way to the front. The action up front was slowed on lap 6 for debris. Once again Madden jumped back out front on the restart, with Fusselman and See battling for second. Another caution 3 laps later, lap 6, would slow the action, as Sylvester spun to bring out the yellow. Madden again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Fusselman working to hold back Hughes, who came from the rear after the lap 1 crash. As Madden paced the field, Fusselman and Hughes would swap the runner up spot until the final caution appeared on lap 13. This time Ricky Miller Jr. slowed with troubles to set up a 3 lap dash to the finish. Madden would jump out into the lead on the restart and then held on to claim his second win on the weekend and the $600 top prize. Fusselman won the battle for 2nd, Hughes settled for 3rd, See was 4th, with Dustin Griffiths coming from 20th to round out the top 5.
The final feature up on the night was the 22 lap Modifieds, with Tyler Shaw and Steve Stewart making up the front row. Stewart would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Matt Gilbertson and Cayden Carter. Gilbertson would jump to the bottom of the track to edge out in front of Stewart on lap 2. Just after the completion of the lap, Richie Gustin, who was running 5th, slowed with a flat tire to bring out the yellow. On the restart Gilbertson moved back out front, with Carter and Ronn Lauritzen, who started 8th, battling for second. Carter would jump to the top of the track to over take Gilbertson for the lead on lap 4 and then started to pull away from the field. The only thing to slow Carter down was a final caution on lap 16, as Bruce Hanford slowed with rear end troubles to bring out the yellow. On the restart Gilbertson went low, Lauritzen used the middle and Carter up top coming out of turn 2 three wide, with Carter grabbing the advantage going into turn 3. Carter would hold on over the final 6 laps to claim his second win on the weekend and picked up the $1,000 top prize. Gilbertson settled for 2nd, Lauritzen was 3rd, Jeff Waterman was 4th, with Kurt Kile finishing 5th after starting in 10th.
