By Jeremy Fox
Oskaloosa, Iowa (September 11th, 2013) – After taking a few weeks off for the Super Nationals, the speedway return to action for the final two points night with Musco Lighting Night. A few drivers made their first visit to victory lane at the monster while a couple of drivers return to victory lane.
First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature and it was John Whalen grabbing the early lead but Merv Chandler grabbed it away on lap four. Chandler cruised on to his ninth win this season at Osky. John Whalen held off his brother Bill Whalen for the runner up spot and Matt Moore came home fourth.
Brayton Carter grabbed the early lead in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feature but just after the completion of lap two the caution wavied when Bill Livezey came to a rest in turn two with a broke rear end. Carter continued to lead and appeared to be heading on to the win until lap 12 on the exit of turn two he got crossed up in front of the field and spun out, meanwhile collecting Logan Anderson and Jason McDaniel. That handed the lead over to AJ Johnson. Johnson took full advantage of that and held off late race challenges from Super Nationals Sport Mod Champion Carter VanDenBerg and Track Point Leader Curtis VanDerWal to take the win. VanDenBerg, VanDerWal, Eric Flander and Corey Van Zante rounded out the top five.
In the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stock feature it was Justin Hook grabbing the lead and appeared to be heading on to the win until Bill Bonnett, Mike Hughes and Steve Allen was able to catch up to Hook. Hook, Bonnett, Hughes and Allen raced for the top spot with Hook remaining out front until the final lap. Bonnett was able to grab his 4th win meanwhile Hughes followed suit grabbing the runner up spot. Hook fell back to third, Allen was fourth and Aaron Osweiler was fifth.
After having the initial start called back in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature it was “From Aross the Street” Corey Stout grabbing the lead but just after the completion of lap two the caution came out when Jason Cook, Curt Hook and Brad Pinkerton got together on the backstretch. Stout refused to let that bother him as he began to pull meanwhile Zack Vanderbeek was working his way through the field. Stout held off a late race charge from Vanderbeek to take his first win of the season at SIS. Kris Walker finish third, Nathan Wood was fourth and Brad Pinkerton was fifth.
Bill Davis grabbed the lead in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds and appeared to be heading on the easy win but the caution came out on lap 13 when Scott Dickey came to a stop in turn 2. On the restart, Davis saw National Point Contender Jesse Sobbing and “Gasman” Cayden Carter on his back bumper but Davis was able to hold them off only to see the yellow come out again on lap 15. Davis was able to hold off both Sobbing and Carter to take the victory. Finishing behind Davis, Sobbing and Carter was Brandon Banks and Jacob Murray.
Final feature of the night was the Iowa Sportsman Series, Kris Walker lead from start to finish in the 35 lapper. Gene Tish, Aaron Osweiler, Darin VanDee and Jared Stephens rounded out the top five.
Next Wednesday Night will be the end of the track points with Pepsi Cola Mahaska Bottling Company and KBOE Radio Season Championships. It will be a normal night of racing with heats and features like usual. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
Remember though the speedway will not be done after next week as the speedway returns to life with the 27th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge on Friday and Saturday October 4th and 5th.
