Davis does it again, wins 11th Annual Stars & Stripes Shootout
KASSON, Minn. (May 27) – Brandon Davis made it two in a row this Memorial Day Weekend as he posted a second $2,000 victory in as many days Sunday night at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn.
Jason Cummins, who won two track championships last year with Davis winding up the runner-up, led the field out of the gate before relinquishing the lead to Jon Tesch after the race’s first caution on lap 11.
Looking to register his series-best fourth win at the 3/8-mile dirt oval, Tesch paced the field for the next 15 laps but Davis, who captured his career-first USMTS win just 24 hours earlier at the Deer Creek Speedway, bolted into the top spot with 13 laps to go.
A third and final caution on lap 31 gave Davis’ pursuers some hope, but the 20-year-old from Medford, Minn., blasted away from the pack on the restart and sailed to the checkered flag with Tesch coming home second about ten car-lengths behind.
Cummins held on for a third-place finish with Joey Jensen and defending USMTS National Champion Ryan Gustin taking fourth and fifth.
USMTS Casey’s Cup Series points leader Rodney Sanders was sixth, nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock came from 15th to secure seventh, polesitter Nick Herrick earned a career-best eighth, Johnny Scott came from 25th to nab ninth and Ryan Ruter rounded our the top 10.
With Sunday night’s win for the ‘Medford Monster,’ there have been 17 different winners in the 30 USMTS programs at the Dodge County Fairgrounds facility during the past dozen years.
The USMTS Casey’s Cup Series will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, with a doubleheader at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., for the 9th Annual Nebraska Shootout presented by Sam’s Club. Both nights will carry a $2,000 top prize.
Races start at 7:00 Friday and 7:30 on Saturday. For more information check out the official Junction Motor Speedway website at www.junctionmotorspeedway.com.
