Denning scores second Davenport late model win of the season
DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 9, 2024) – Stock car racing returned to the Davenport Speedway after the Mississippi Valley Fair. The first night back at the track yielded two first-time Davenport feature winners and multiple caution-free features.
Travis Denning captured his second Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model feature win of the season. Travis started tenth and quickly moved up to second by lap seven. Nine more laps would pass by before he could secure the lead in lapped traffic. Denning took the checkers with a 1.725 second gap on second place CJ Horn.
Nathan Balensiefen crossed the line in third, but failed post-race inspection. Point leader Matt Ryan was credited with third, Evan Miller fourth, and Dustin Schram fifth.
Miller, Ryan, and Schram each won a late model heat race.
Post-race activities also played a part in the Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Modified main. Spencer Diercks put on a show for the fans. Spencer started twelveth in the non-stop twenty-lap feature. Diercks grabbed the lead at midway and would lead the rest of the way to the checkers. Unfortunately his car came up light at the scales and by IMCA rules was dropped to a last place finish.
The victory went to Chris Zogg, his third of the season. Second was Kyle Montgomery with Blaise Lewis third. Matt Werner and Scotte Lemke finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Tyler Maschmann collected his first Davenport win in D&K Home Products IMCA SportMod action. Tyler started fourth and took the lead on lap two. Once in front, Maschmann had to hold off Kevin Goben and Logan Veloz. Veloz was closing fast, but slowed on the final lap, falling to a fifth place finish. Goben finished second followed by Shane Paris and Rayce Mullen.
Austin Riggs finally scored a Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock feature win. Riggs started third and led all fifteen laps of the race. Street Stock point leader Tony VonDresky made Riggs work for the victory. Tony hounded Austin for most of the race with Riggs holding a 0.090 second advantage at the checkered flag. Donnie Louck finished third, with Andrew Burk fourth and Landen Chrestensen fifth.
The Thiesen’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature saw Daniel Wauters score his fourth feature win this season. Wauters started in the third row and led all fifteen laps of the main. Shane Richardson took home a second place finish. Randy LaMar, Jared Miller, and Jordan Miles finished third through fifth, in that order.
Cyle Hawkins posted feature win number five of the season in the Fred’s Towing & Cantrell’s Towing 4-Cylinder class. Hawkins now has one win in each month of the 2024 season, April through August. Drew Wise took second place honors. Harrison Horn, Steve Boyle, and Zachary Pappas rounded out the top five.
The next event at Davenport Speedway is the 2024 Season Championships on Friday, August 23rd. Post-season action begins September 6th, with the Night of Destruction.
