Dover claims second Steve King Memorial
by: Bryan Hulbert
JETMORE, Kan. (May 25, 2012) On a windy evening in the plains of Kansas, Jack Dover blew into Jetmore and took the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real cash at the fifth annual Steve King Memorial at the Great American Dirt Track.
Dover, who took the inaugural Steve King Memorial in 2009, had to pass for the lead twice after the caution flew just after his first pass on race long leader Tony Bruce, Jr. on Lap 17; taking the field to the last fully completed lap.
“I told my guys we were going to win this thing” said an excited Jack Dover. Asked about the car and how the race unfolded, Dover replied, “That red flag at the end definitely helped tonight. I told my guys what to do, and the changes helped. Having Johnny behind me was definitely a big pusher and made me drive the car a lot harder. I’m just speechless right now winning this thing twice.”
His second pass on the TBJ Promotions No. 18 following the Lap 17 restart stuck.
Taking the point on Lap 18, Dover became the eighth different winner of 2013 with the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real, earning a cool $4,000 winner’s bounty.
Collected in an opening lap melee that collected six drivers in turns one and two, the Print Place No. 45x was forced to race from thirteenth for his runner up finish.
“You know, we had a good car. It was just hard to pass in the Heat Races. We really didn’t change a whole lot on this Print Place/Mesilla Valley Transportation car for the feature. We came a long way from having to go the back, so, we’ll take it” said Herrera.
Tony Bruce, Jr. who led the first seventeen laps faded to third at the checkered flag. Disappointed in his finish, Bruce commented on his run by saying, “I just could not come out of two no matter what I did. I’m just really disappointed for the King family. I really wanted to win this race but it just the way it goes. We were really good, but we still just missed it.”
Pulling a nineteen car field to the green, Kansas native Jon Freeman led into the first two turns on both starts until Tony Bruce, Jr. raced by on the opening lap. Slowed six times over the course of the night’s Protect the Harvest A-Feature, Bruce’s best lead of 1.926 seconds came as the caution lights blinked on Lap 18 for the stalled No. 05j of Justin Medlock.
His second win in as many days in ASCS competition, Dover along with Herrera, and Bruce graced the podium with Brad Loyet fourth and Jeff Swindell holding onto fifth despite a broken front nose wing. Dustin Morgan earned the night’s PitStopUSA.com Hard charger, advancing seven to sixth followed by Danny Wood. Seth Berman, Ray Seeman, and Jason Johnson completed the top ten after having to drop the back twice; first on the opening lap and again on Lap 26 when the MVT No. 41 spun to avoid hitting another car.
Rod End Supply Heat one went to Tony Bruce, Jr. Ti22 Heat two belonged to Ray Seemann with Cole Wood taking the final Wesmar Heat three.
The night’s Hawk Performance Products Fastest Lap of the Night belonged to Jack Dover with a 14.982 second lap.
