Exciting racing action tightens Davenport point battles

| July 13, 2024

DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 12, 2024) – As The 2024 racing season starts to wind down, the battle for track championships becomes more intense. That was evident Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. Fast-paced racing action and some attrition had every point race at the track tighten.

In the Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model division, parity is still the name of the game. Evan Miller became the ninth different winner in the ten races held so far. Miller started outside on the front row and led all twenty-five laps of the feature. The victory also gave Miller the chance to gain valuable ground on point leader Matt Ryan who finished eighth.
Nick Marolf started on the pole and finished second. Gary Webb started fourth and wound up third. Joe Beal and Nathan Balensiefen rounded out the top five.
Marolf, Bryce Garnhart, and Jesse Bodin won the late model heat races.
With just three point races remaining, the top four late model drivers are separated by just 27 points.

The Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Modified feature had the most passing between the front runners. Kyle Montgomery would lead the first ten laps of the twenty-lap main with Spencer Diercks right in his tracks. As the top groove started to wear out, ninth place starter Ben Chapman was moving forward on the bottom of the racetrack.
As the leaders came around to complete lap eleven, the top three were three wide. Diercks would pass Montgomery for the lead. Once in front, Spencer slowly started to widen his advantage over second place Chapman.
Diercks would collect his second feature win of the year at Davenport with Chapman holding on to second. Matt Werner started in the sixth row and finished third. Pole sitter Dustin Smith took fourth, ahead of Blaise Lewis in fifth.
The unofficial point standings show Ben Chapman and Chris Zogg now tied for the IMCA Modified division lead at Davenport Speedway.

The D&K Home Products IMCA SportMod class saw Shane Paris capture his first Davenport feature win of the season. Paris started in the fourth row but quickly worked his way to the front, taking the lead on lap four. Once in the lead, Shane needed only to survive the ensuing restarts to secure the win.
Trey Jacobs had his best race of the year at Davenport with a second place finish. Kevin Goben took third, with Justin Schroeder and Levi Heath fourth and fifth respectively.
Point leader Logan Veloz was plagued with problems Friday. His point lead over Rayce Mullen has now shrunk to 25.

Donnie Louck recorded his first Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock feature win of the season. Louck started in the fifth row and would not see the lead until late in the race. Andrew Burk brought home a second place finish. Jesse Owen took third over Zach Zuberbrier and Tony VonDresky.
After Friday’s races, the top four in Street Stock points (VonDresky, Landen Chrestensen, Louck, and Owen) are now separated by just four points.

There was another first-time winner in the Thiesen’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Kaden Staley of Muscatine, made his first visit to Competitive Concrete Victory Lane. Randy LaMar finished second and dug into Jordan Miles’ point lead, which now stands at twelve markers. Lukas Short, Sheldon Hunter, and Karter Miles finished third through fifth in that order.

Shawn McDermott was the feature winner in the Fred’s Towing & Cantrell’s Towing 4-Cylinder class. It was his second of the year. Dustin Munn, Mike Morrow, and Zach Brenner were second, third, and fourth. Point leader Cyle Hawkins finished fifth, despite dropping out early with mechanical issues.

Don’t miss the last Davenport Speedway points race before the Mississippi Valley Fair, next Friday, July 19th. Funnel cakes, corn dogs, and other fair food will be available on the grounds. All six weekly classes will be in action.
