WAKEENEY, KS (August 1)—Auto racing returned to the Trego County Fair at the Wakeeney (KS) Speedway on Wednesday evening, August 1, with 3 divisions in action.

Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick of Wakeeney battled younger brother ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick most of the 25-lap IMCA Modified feature but was able to hold on for his second feature win of the season, and is the first modified driver to repeat in 11 modified shows this season at the 3/8-mile oval.  Dylan led the first 3 laps before defending track champion Corey Lagroon took the lead.  But Dylan fought back and regained control on lap 11.  Travis worked his way past Lagroon for second when the caution waved on lap 15 when Ronnie Hill went off turn 4.  When the green flag replaced the yellow, Travis drove around Dylan on the outside to take a lead he would not relinquish.  Dylan had to settle for second behind Travis, with Nate Moore, Tim Watts and Lagroon rounding out the top five.  Heat race winners were Mike Lunow, Mike Petersilie, and Moore.

The IMCA Stock Car feature saw Jeff Tubbs lead all 20 laps enroute to his third win of the season at Wakeeney.  Tubbs was challenged early on by heat two winner Bruce Plumisto, who ended up with problems and had to pit, then later in the race by Jason Schoenberger.  Schoenberger settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Nick ‘The Spiderman’ Tubbs, B.J. Wagoner and Michael Meyer.  Terry Cunningham won the other heat race.

A new face appeared in the Jason Oil Winner’s Circle in the IMCA Northern Sport Mod division.  Cory Struckhoff led the first 9 laps of the 20-lap event before Chris Heim made a pass inside in turns 3 & 4 to take over the top spot.  Heim continued to lead through lap 15 when Trenton Kleweno of Hays went around Heim in turns 3 & 4 to take the lead and hold on for his first win this season at Wakeeney.  Heim, Struckhoff, Austin Walker and Josh Appel completed the top five.  Willie Wynn, Kurtis Pihl and Kleweno won the three heat races.

Racing returns to Wakeeney Speedway on Sunday, August 12, with all 4 regular divisions in action.  It will be ‘Back to School Kids Night’ with all kids 12 & under admitted free with a paid adult.  Race time will be 7:00 p.m.
