Fisher Scores First Career 305 Sprint Feature Win at 34 Raceway
by Brian Neal
West Burlington, IA (Saturday, July 15, 2017) – Saturday was Sonny’s Market night at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, as it was another weekly points event. On this night three drivers won their first feature of the season at the track, one of them earned their first career. Then four others picked up their multiple wins of the season at the track.
The 20 lap Victory Lane Suspensions IMCA Modified was the first to take to the track, with George Spence III and Chadwick Giberson leading the field to green. Spence III would take advantage of his front row start to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Giberson and Creston Williams. Just as Spence III started to put some distance between himself and the battle behind him, the first caution of the race slowed the field on lap 4. Williams, who was running 5th, spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Spence III moved back out front, with Dustin Smith and Dugan Thye getting past Giberson, who got off the track in turn 2 and fell to the back. After lap 5 was scored complete the second caution came out, as Brandon Rothzen slowed to a stop in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. Spence III once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Smith and Thye battling for second. Again Spence III started to pull away from the battle behind him, when the third and final caution of the race brought the field back to his back bumper on lap 10. Darrow Lillie spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Spence III jumped back out front, with Smith and Thye still following. Spence III then pulled away over the final laps to claim his first win of the season at 34 Raceway. Dustin Smith was 2nd, Bill Roberts Jr. crossed the line in 3rd but was penalized for spinning Thye in turn 4 on the final lap. This would move Rich Smith to 3rd, Dean McGee was moved up to 4th, with Dennis LaVeine getting moved to 5th after starting in 9th.
Up next was the 15 lap Sunoco Fuel Mod Lite feature, with Austin Bowling and Brian Tipps making up the front row. Tipps used his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Michael Dominguez and Devon Rouse, who started 6th. The lead for Tipps lasted until lap 3, when Rouse went by on the top of the track to grab the top spot away. While Rouse set the pace out front, Mike Morrill, who started 8th, was working his way towards the front. On lap 5 Morrill took second from Tipps and then went to work on cutting into Rouse’s lead. Morrill was helped in his efforts to cut into the lead of Rouse when the first caution of the race appeared on lap 10. Ashtin Seager spun in turn 3 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Morrill worked under Rouse to edge him out at the line to grab the lead. Then just after the completion of the lap another caution came out, as debris down the front stretch brought out the yellow. Morrill would jump back out front on the restart, with Dominguez over taking Rouse for second. Another caution came out on the completion of lap 12, when Bowling spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. This would bring the race to the time limit, with one attempt of a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart Morrill jumped back out front, with Dominguez and Rouse battling for second. Morrill would go on to lead the final laps to score his second win of the season at the track. Dominguez won the battle for 2nd, Rouse was 3rd, Dave Nelson started 10th and finished 4th, with Seager recovering from his spin on lap 10 to come back up to finish in 5th.
Colton Fisher and Andy Krieger led the field to green in the 20 lap WT Gabeline & Sons Trucking 305 Sprint feature, with Fisher grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Krieger and Nick Guernsey. Fisher, who was setting a fast pace, started to pull away from the rest of the field, and looked like he was heading to an easy win. But the first caution of the race came out on lap 14, and brought the rest of the field back to his back bumper. Chris Campbell would spin in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Fisher moved back out front, with Krieger and Daniel Bergquist close behind. Another lap scored complete, lap 15, produced another caution, as Rob Pohren spun off the track in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Fisher once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Krieger working to hold off Jarrod Schneiderman, who started 9th. Schneiderman would slip past Krieger for second on lap 18, and then tried to chase down Fisher for the lead. But Fisher would hold on to score his first career 305 Sprint feature win. Schneiderman was 2nd, Krieger was 3rd, Tanner Gebhardt was 4th, with Bergquist rounding out the top 5.
The 15 lap Pepsi IMCA Stock Car feature was up next, with Mark Bowman and Cody Washburne making up the front row. Washburne took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Ray Raker and Jake Wenig. Raker would follow in Washburne’s tire tracks over the next 9 laps, and was waiting for Washburne to make a mistake. On lap 11 Washburne got high coming off turn 2 which allowed Raker to slip past to take over the top spot. Two laps later, lap 13, Tom Bowling Jr., who started 8th, slipped past Washburne for second and then went to work on Raker for the lead. Coming off turn 4 to get the white flag Bowling Jr. got up beside Raker, with Raker edging him out at the line. Then just as the lap was scored complete the first and only caution came out. Washburne, who was running 3rd, spun in turn 2 to set up a one lap dash to the finish. On the restart Raker grabbed the lead and held off Bowling Jr. to pick up his second win of the season at the track. John Oliver Jr. finished 3rd after starting in 9th, Dane Fenton was 4th, with Wenig coming home in 5th.
Up next was the 12 lap Sonny’s Market 4-Cylinder feature, with Ashton Blain and Eric Eyeleading the field to the drop of the green flag. But it was third place starter David Prim who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Brandon Lambert, who started 6th, and Larry Miller. Lambert used the momentum off the top of the track to grab the top spot away from Prim on lap 3, with Miller following him into second. While Lambert paced the field out front, Kimberly Abbott, who started 7th, and Craig Bangert, who started 8th, were working their way towards the front. The action was slowed for the first and only time on lap 8, when Jerrod Nichols spun off the top of the track in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Lambert moved back out front, with Bangert and Abbott glued to his back bumper. Despite a few challenges from Bangert and Abbott over the final laps, Lambert was able to hold them off to claim his second win of the season at 34 Raceway. Bangert held on for 2nd, Abbott was 3rd, Miller was 4th, with Prim finishing in 5th.
Ron Kibbe and Randy LaMar led the field to green in the 15 lap Casebine Credit Union IMCA SportMod feature, with Kibbe jumping out front to lead lap 1 over LaMar and John Oliver Jr. The lead for Kibbe only lasted until lap 3, when Oliver Jr. slipped by to take the top spot. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 4, as debris in turn 4 brought out the yellow. On the restart Oliver Jr. jumped back out front, with Kyle Hill, who started 8th, and Austen Becerra, who started 9th, battling for the runner up spot. The three car battle out front was slowed for the second time of the race on lap 11, this time LaMar spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Oliver Jr. once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Becerra over taking Hill for second. Becerra and Hill challenged Oliver Jr. over the final laps, but Oliver Jr. was able to hold them off to claim his first win of the season at the track. Becerra was 2nd, Hill was 3rd, Sean Wyett finished 4th after starting in 10th, with Jeffrey DeLonjay coming from 12th to round out the top 5.
The final feature to take to the track was the 12 lap Crazy Coyote Mini Hauler Trucks, with Dane Fenton and Drake Fenton leading the field to green. Drake Fenton used the bottom of the track to edge out brother Dane Fenton on lap 1. Dane tried to get around Drake over the entire 12 laps. But Drake was able to hold him off to claim his second win of the season at 34 Raceway. Dane Fenton settled for 2nd, Dylan Reverend was 3rd, Lance Applegarth was 4th, with Jacob Ruble rounding out the top 5.
