Four first-time winners at Davenport Speedway

by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 27, 2014) – The second Kid’s Night of the 2014 season at the Davenport Speedway provided some wild racing action and four fresh faces to visit victory lane. After the races concluded, the kids were given a chance to race their bicycles on the track.

Mike Murphy Jr. made his first 2014 appearance in victory lane after an exciting Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Gary Webb led the first ten laps of the race, before yielding to Marty Diercks on lap eleven. Murphy took over on lap twelve and quickly built up a straightaway lead on the rest of the field.

Justin Kay started mid-pack and picked his way to the front. On the final lap, Kay was on Murphy’s rear bumper going into turn one, but could get no closer. As the leaders came past the checkered flag, the red flag came out for Webb’s car which was flipped over in turn one. Gary was able to walk away from the incident.

Marty Diercks finished third, with Andy Nezworski and Todd Malmstrom completing the top five.

Rob Henry captured his first Milan Heating & Air IMCA Modified feature. The twenty lap race was a classic high side-low side battle. The first half of the race it was Henry on the bottom and Mike Fluegel on the high side. The two drivers would exchange the lead four times in the first eight laps.

After a lap nine restart, Fluegel got shuffled back and Joe Beal became the high-side hustler. Beal was able to get past Henry once, but the pass was erased by a caution flag. Henry was first to the checkers, with Beal second, and Kelly Meyer third. Chris Zogg finished fourth and Brandon Durbin fifth.

Thirty IMCA Modifieds were on hand. Beal, Bob Dominacki, and Jason Pershy won the heats. Terry Rentfro and Dan Chapman took the two B-mains.

Kevin Dickey scored his first Koehler Electric Street Stock win of the season. Dickey jumped into the lead from outside pole position. Kevin held the top spot until the caution flag flew on lap eight. After the restart, Dickey and Cary Brown would swap the several times before Dickey took the lead for good on lap twelve. Brown would finish second with Perry Gellerstedt taking third. Cord Williams and Nick Claussen completed the top five.

Dan Mohr made a rare visit to the Davenport Speedway pay off with a win in the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod main. Mohr passed Bryce Garnhart for the lead, coming out of turn four on the final lap, to secure the victory. Garnhart would finish a close second, with early race leader Dustin Crear third. Henry Carson and Joe Grant were fourth and fifth respectively.

Luke Benischek collected his second feature win of the season in the Roto-Rooter 4-Stock division. Zach Dahl held the early lead until Andy Loy swept by. Loy held the lead until his car coasted to a stop in the infield. Benischek led the remaining laps for the win, with closing Brandon Dahl second. Jake Benischek took third, ahead of Andrew Fitzgerald and Aaron Hitt.

Independence Day will bring the Fourth of July Street Stock Clash to the Davenport Speedway. $2,000 awaits the winner of the 50-lap Street Stock main. Weekly point races will be our other four classes.
