By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON,IA (6-4-16) – Ryner Transportation night at 34 Raceway saw two racers make it to victory lane for their first wins this season at the 3/8 mile. Getting their first wins Saturday night, June 4 were Nick Guernsey, Burlington (305 sprints), and Joey Gower, Quincy, Il. (IMCA Sport Mods). Making it back to victory lane were Bill Roberts, Jr., Burlington (IMCA Modifieds), John Oliver, Danville (IMCA Stock Cars), Kimberly Abbott, Camp Point, Il (4 cylinders) and Mike Morrill, Pleasant Hill (mod lites).
Coming up this week, Saturday, June 11, will be Casebine Credit Union and the second annual Chad Gall Memorial Race night at 34 Raceway. Classes competing will be the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints, Ryner Transportation IMCA Modifieds, Pepsi IMCA Stock Cars, Casebine Credit Union IMCA Sport Mods, IMRA Midgets and Sonny’s Market 4 Cylinders. Modifieds and Stock Cars will be a draw/redraw show with $1000 to win the IMCA Stock Car and IMCA Modified features. Don’t miss this special event in memory of Chad Gall.
Joey Gower, Quincy, Il. cruised to his first IMCA Sport Mod feature win at 34 Raceway this year. The fifteen lapper started out rough due to a five car pile up on the front stretch on the first lap that involved Cody Washburn, Wesley Mayfield, Daniel Keltner, John Oliver and Scott Williams. Oliver would be able to continue while the others had to call it a night. When racing resumed, Gower took the lead from his front row start and never looked back pulling away from the field. Austen Becerra moved up to second from his sixth row start to finish second and Oliver would end up finishing third in the sixteen car field.
Sixteen 305 Sprints took to the track for the second feature race of the night with sixteen year old Tanner Gebhardt and veteran racer Andy Krieger on the front row. Gebhardt took the early lead in the twenty lap race followed by Krieger. The young gun, Gebhardt, was putting a little distance between him and rest of the field till the only caution of the race came out on lap nine. Nick Guernsey took advantage of the caution and closed the gap on the leader finally getting by him on lap thirteen of the twenty lapper. Guernsey then went on to hold off the challenge from Gebhardt to take the win by a car length. Shane Quam and Jarrod Schneiderman would follow to finish third and fourth.
Mike Morrill, Pleasant Hill, was laying on his side between turns one and two with four laps to go after making contact with one of the cars he was passing. Four laps later he was in the winners circle. The 34 Raceway crew used their manpower to get Morrill back on his wheels and he continued from the back of the field. With Jason Masongarb in the lead, Morrill then worked his way back up to the front taking the lead just as they arrived at the finish line for his third win this season in a thrilling finish. Wyatt Wilkerson and Erin Turner round out the top four.
Bill Roberts, Jr, Burlington, led from start to finish in the twenty lap IMCA Modified feature. Roberts had to hold off a serious challenge from Hunter Marriott of Brookfield, Mo. for the final eight laps taking the checkered by a car length. Marriott settled for second with Dennis LaVeine, Bruce Hanford and Dustin Smith rounding out the top five.
John Oliver, Jr., Danville, took the lead from John Brockway on lap four of the twenty lap IMCA Stock Car feature for his second win this season. Oliver developed a sizeable lead for the first twelve laps till the first of two yellow flags came out on lap thirteen. The caution restart would close the gap Oliver had developed with Tom Bowling running second. Another caution stopped the action on lap sixteen but Oliver would continue to hold his lead and take the win. Bowling, Ray Raker, Chad Krogmeier (moving up from his sixth row start) and Brockway would round out the top five.
The final feature of the night was the Sonny’s Market 4 Cylinders with Kimberly Abbott getting her third straight win. Abbott took the lead from Jacob Oglesby on lap seven of the twelve lap race and went on to take the win. Ron Kibbe moved up to finish second with Oglesby, Brandon Lambert and Larry Miller rounding out the top five.
