Gustin, Smith, Luellen, Van Deest and Huggins win on Karl Performance Night
By Jeremy Fox
Marshalltown, Iowa (June 5th, 2015) – Many wondered if the racing action on Friday Night could live up to the racing on Tuesday and the answer is yes it could. There was great two, three and sometimes four wide racing all night on Karl Performance Night at the Races. 72 cars signed in to tame the quarter mile.
Jimmy Gustin (IMCA Modifieds), Donavon Smith (IMCA Stock Cars), Austin Luellen (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Jared Van Deest (IMCA Northern SportMods) make a return visit to victory lane meanwhile Joel Huggins picks up his first of the season in the Mod Lites.
The Mod Lites 15 lap feature event saw three wide racing on lap one but it was Randy Bryan grabbing the early lead.Bryan saw Joel Huggins work his way from eighth to second, Huggins took the lead away on lap three. Huggins bobbled in turn four on lap nine but he managed to hold off Travis Stensland, Mike Kennedy, Josh May and Bryan for the win.
Dusty Masolini started outside row one in the IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature and he took advantage by taking the lead after fending off Kevin Yearington, Colby Heishman and Ryan King. Masolin began to pull away until lap traffic slowed him down and others began to find a line that worked for them. Travis Peterson worked his way to the inside and took the lead away on lap 13. Peterson had Jared Van Deest, who took second away from Masolini and Masolini right there. Peterson liked the bottom meanwhile Jared Van Deest like the top side and they got into a battle the final laps and it was Van Deest making the return trek to victory lane. Peterson settled for second, Sam Wieben was third, Clint Luellen was fourth and Masolini fell back to fifth.
Travis Merical led the first lap in the Toby K’s Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stock feature event but just after the 1st lap the caution came out for debris. Eric Stanton took the lead away on lap two just before another caution for debris. Stanton saw Austin Luellen worked his way through and it was Luellen taking the lead away. Luellen went on to take his 6th win of the season at Motown. Stanton came home second. Brice Udelhoven finished third, Gary Pfantz was fourth and Andy Hick was fifth.
Nick Thelen wrestled the lead away from JD Kennedy in the Miller Lite IMCA Stock Car feature. Thelen lead until lap four when Donavon Smith worked his way from eighth to the lead. Smith was not fazed by the caution as he went on to take his 4th win at Motown. Michael Jaennette, Dave Atcher, Trent Murphy and Steve Meyer rounded out the top five.
Final feature of the night was the Coors Light IMCA Modifieds feature and it was Adam Larson, who started inside row two taking early race lead. Larson looked comfortable out front however shortly after he jumped the cushion opening the door just as the 1st race caution came out on lap eight. Larson lead but it was Jimmy Gustin taking it away with ten laps to go. Another caution came out on lap 11 when Joel Rust was sitting in the exit of turn two. Gustin looked comfortable but the battle was excitng behind him with Larson, Richie Gustin and Ronn Laurtizen racing for position. Jimmy Gustin held on to take the win with Lauritzen, Larson, Richie Gustin and Jon Snyder finished second through fifth respectully.
Racing action continues again next Friday Night with Hot Laps at 6:50pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
