I-35 Speedway Press Release Week 8 Racin for Rian

| June 28, 2020

Winston, Mo (June 27, 2020) – A night to remember, a night to congratulate, a night for a sendoff, a night for super exciting you don’t know until the last few laps who is going to win occurred at I-35 Speedway to close out the month of June.  Twenty-three races, Racin for Rian, and congratulations to our 2020 seniors and oh a Happy Birthday sung by the entire audience, all on race night number 8, June 27, 2020.

Intermission was fun as we honored the 2020 graduates from Oak Park, Liberty, Gallatin, Excelsior Springs, and Lawson High Schools.  The entire crowd wished the seniors “Congratulations” as we send them off to conquer the next stages of life.  A Happy Birthday was sung by the crowd to Senior and E Mod competitor Blake Bland.

The Pure Stocks started off the order of events for this race night and what enjoyable racing!  Heat races were claimed by Brandon Dixon and Kyle Rowland.  At the start of the feature this became a three-way battle for the win race, Dixon, Rowland, and Kriston Hisel came out of turn 4 to complete lap 1, side by side by side.  For three laps this close racing was occurring until Hisel and Dixon touched down the back straight.  Hisel had to retire after four laps.  This seemed to propel Dixon who grabbed the lead.  Rowland dropped back to finish fourth, with DJ Barnes grabbing second, Conrad Kaufman coming home third, and Bobby Ohrenburg claiming fifth.

Following the Pure Stock were the Bumblebee sounding Sport Compacts.  These drivers get these 4-cylinder machines wound putting power to the ground via the front wheels.    Heat winners were John Willard and David Miller III.  This front row took off with Miller first and Willard on his heal.  Lap 7 saw Willard get the upper hand taking the lead and winning his sixth feature of the year.  Miller was second followed by Christian Pease, Steven Bunton, and Levi Cox.

Taking the track next were the Midwest Limited Late Models.  Heat race winners were Kerry Davis and John Willard.  At the drop of the green in the feature it was Davis grabbing the lead with Gregg Truelove immediately on his bumper.  As the laps ticked away Davis was holding a fairly good lead when out came the yellow.  After the yellow Davis faced constant pressure from the one six of Bobby Penney.  Over the last three laps Penney would get inside Davis off turn 2 but was unable to make the pass, Davis winning his seventh feature race of the year.  Tucker Cox came home third, Truelove fourth, and JD Gresham brought his machine home fifth.

E Mods took the track after the Late Models.  Heat wins went to Shaunie Lanning and Kyler Girard.  At the drop of the green for the feature it was pole setter Lanning using the inside position to grab the lead.  She was not to be denied earning her fourth win of the season.  Casey Burnett started sixth and came home second, Kameron Hanes claimed third, Michael Taylor III was fourth and Girard finished fifth.

The Midwest Lightning Sprints brought their brand of racing to the 3/8s mile oval.  Jeff Bard and Mark Billings won their heat races.  Feature time came and Mark Billings grabbed the lead and looked like he would be the one taking the checkered but, the always important but, with two laps to go suddenly he pulled off the track leaving the win for Stanley Kreisel.  Ken Billings was second, Tyler Johnson third, Jeff Bard fourth and Brandon Smith finished fifth.

Next up the USRA classes, beginning with the ultra-competitive B Mods.  Heat race winners were Tyler Cadwallader, Chase Galvan, and Nic Hanes.  A couple of tries to get lap one in the books and then the B Mods were off to the races.  Front row Galvan and Hanes put on a three-lap show as each tried desperately to gain the upper hand.  On lap four give it to Galvan who drove away for his first win in this class in 2020.  Nic Hanes collected second, Jeffrey Sears brought his racecar home in third, Daniel Harris was fourth and Cadwallader finished fifth.

Doug Keller has been the man to beat as he has moved into the USRA Stock Car division.  On Racin for Rian Night he collected his sixth win in nine tries in 2020.  The battle was for second as Gary Donaldson, Gene Stigall, Jeff Dixon, and Jason Estes raced to be runner up to Keller.  At the checkered it was Donaldson second, Stigall third, Dixon in fourth, and his first time out this year Estes was fifth.

The USRA A Mod heat race winners were Tyler Hibner and Chris Mercer.  Come feature time the smooth track was perfect for Tyler Hibner as he set sail.  The exciting dogfight was who was going to claim second.  The battle was between Terry Schultz, Lee Hibner, and Austin Johnson.  At one point those three were three wide out of four, unfortunately the battle got extremely close on the back straight between Hibner and Johnson with contact causing Johnson to retire from the fracas.  At the finish it was Tyler Hibner claiming his first victory of the season and the points lead.  He was followed by Terry Schultz, Lee Hibner, Ed Noll, and Chris Mercer.

June is now in the history books, here comes a super exciting July at I-35 Speedway.
