I-35 Speedway, Winston, Mo. results for May 14, 2023
By: Phillip Wilson, Track Announcer
134 (One hundred thirty-four) cars checked in for Tompkins industries night at I-35 Speedway. Fans were treated to some great action in all classes as the drivers put on a show like no other.
In the E-Mods, Adam Dunwoodie would capture his third win in a row tonight, which means next week should he qualify for the feature Dunwoodie will start from the tenth position. Aaron Jones would run a smooth race as he would come home second, Nathan Hampton would have another good run finishing third, after leading early Peyton Baker would finish fourth and Mark Anderson would come through the field finishing fifth.
In Pure Stock action Jeffrey Sears would find the line he needed to secure another win. Sears would have tough competition but park the 13j in McCarthy Autogroup Victory Lane. Mike Miller led the race early and would battle Ava Dixon for second with Miller finishing second and Dixon third. Anthony Whitham and Tyler Starmer would run up front the entire twelve lap event and finish fourth and fifth.
After retiring early from his heat race Midwest Limited Late Model points leader Houston Johnson would slip passed then race leader Tommy Cordray to pick up his fourth win in the division. Cordray would have a fast hot rod all night finishing second, defending track champion Ed Noll was third followed by Vic Lovejoy and Jenna Johnson in fourth and fifth.
The Open Vintage series made their first appearance at the famed I-35 Speedway and this race was worth the wait. Andy Wiles and former Sprint Car competitors Mike and Ron Lefholz traded the lead back and forth lap after lap. When the checkered flag flew Andy Wiles would pick up the win, Ron Lefholz was second, Mike Lefholz third, I-35 veteran Lonnie Farley was fourth and Steve Tanner in the double X was fifth.
The USRA B-Mods would produce another exciting race as Shadren Turner would park his J2 chassis in McCarthy Autogroup Victory Lane again. It looked like it was going to be a repeat of last week’s race between Turner, Tyler Cadwallader and points leader Daniel Harris before a mechanical failure would end Harris’s night. Cadwallader would keep pace finishing second, Ethan Issacs would get a podium finish in his first trip to I-35 Speedway this season finishing third, Tim Eaton would make a last lap pass on Lucas Isaac’s finishing fourth, while Isaac’s finished fifth.
Chris Mercer picked up his second Medieval USRA Stock Car feature win of the season, and his second in three weeks. Jeff Dixon and Gerald Wahwahsuck put the pressure on but Mercer would hold on for the victory. Dixon would come home right behind him in second, Tommy Ground returned this week finishing third, Brandon Dixon gained seven positions finishing fourth and Wahwahsuck was fifth.
Former Modified track champion and multiple time feature winner Steven Glenn would return tonight in the USRA Modifieds and would look to be on his way to another win. Glenn would lead the first 15 circuits with numerous challenges but would see that win escape his grasp with Matt Johnson taking home the trophy. Johnson would make his first trip to I-35 Speedway this season and would visit McCarthy Autogroup victory Lane. Points leader Houston Johnson would finish second, Darren Shaw would bring his new number 711 up to a podium finish in third, Lee Hibner rebounded to finish fourth and Ben Stockton, gearing up for the Mike Tanner memorial on June 10 would finish fifth in his first trip to I-35 Speedway of the season.
Last week, Brad Mick would pick up his first win of the season in the Sport Compacts and would also inherit the points lead. This week Mick made his second trip to victory lane capturing his second win of the season. Jonnathon Hartman would continue to impress finishing second, Chris Wright finished third, Brad Aleshire fourth and Harold Robb Jr would rebound to finish fifth.
Eddy Noll return to McCarthy Autogroup victory lane for the fifth time this season in the junior sport compact class. Last week’s winner Payton Hanes looked to have the race in hand until her car faded toward the middle to the end of the race. Noll would set sail from there picking up the win as Grant Sheetz would put the pressure on finishing a close second, Maddy Barr finished third, Katelyn Fleming was fourth and Payton Hanes would round out the top five. Each week these kids continue to improve and get faster and look to be the future of this great sport.
Congratulations to this week’s fan of the week Reagan Penning sponsored by DC Racing, Aaron Jones Racing, C.A.R.B., Robb Racing, Shadren Turner Racing and Michael King Racing.
Make plans to join us next week for Larry McFee trucking night at the races as we will be joined for the first time this season by the kid’s power wheels races.
