JJ Baumli Takes Doyle Lance Remembrance Race Checkered, Andersen, Nitsch, Asher and Barnes also Winners
By: Jacob Blair
OSBORN, Mo. – When the big money is on the line, it is historically JJ Baumli always challenging to run away with the winner’s check. However, for the Doyle Lance Remembrance Race for the IMCA Stock Cars, it looked as though Mich Ross and Connor Masoner would be the one’s battling for the trophy.
Ross led more than half of the 20-lap feature, with Masoner in his tire tracks. With a few laps to go, Masoner got a run on Ross and the two made contact. Both driver’s left the track with flat tires and Baumli inherited the lead and the eventual win. Chad Clancy, making his first appearance in a Stock Car this season, finished in the second position. Tim Eaton, also making his first Stock Car appearance of 2020 finished third, with Thomas Roberts fourth and Brad Derry in fifth.
The IMCA Modifieds put on the race of the night as it came down to a photo finish to determine the winner. Chad Clancy drove to the early lead, using the bottom of the race track. As Clancy built a gap, Shayne Bailey, Steven Bowers Jr., Chad Andersen, Josh Munsen and Clay Hale were in the next pack of cars battling for position, while also searching for a line to chase down Clancy.
After halfway, Bailey found some speed on the high side and started gaining on Clancy. Using the help of a few cautions, Bailey made his move on Clancy getting to his outside. After briefly taking the lead, Bailey jumped the cushion and got into the wall ending his chance at a win. Bailey however showed Andersen where the fast line was, and on the final restart, Andersen got to the outside of Clancy. The two battled side-by-side for the final two laps and Andersen edged Clancy at the line by 0.026 seconds for his first trip to Westfall GMC Victory Lane. Bowers finished third, with Hale fourth and Munsen fifth.
Although the IMCA Sport Mods were a little low in number, the racing between the top four made for some great racing. Pole-sitter Tim Eaton jumped to the early lead, but Chris Wright quickly made the move to the point. Steven Clancy and Zach Nitsch were right there as well. Multiple times it looked as though the four might try to make it four-wide, and when the battle settled, it was Nitsch with the lead. He held onto it the rest of the race and picked up the win. Clancy finished second with Wright in third. Eaton finished fourth and Lonnie Hibner rounded out the top five.
In the E-Modifieds, Justin Asher grabbed his second win of the season from a fifth place starting position. He felt pressure from Chris Dishong all race long, but Dishong never made a strong enough move to make the pass. Rookie Colton Couch continues his impressive debut season with a third place finish. Gary Ainsworth and Josh Adkins wrapped up the top five.
The Pure Stocks saw the youngest winner of the night, as teenager DJ Barnes picked up his first win at US 36 in 2020. DJ Barnes had to deal with a late green-white-checkered finish and did so with poise on his way to the win. Nate Barnes charged late, from an eighth place starting position to finish second. Kyle Rowland, Tyler Starmer and Kasey Ayers rounded out the top five.
Up next at US 36 Raceway is two big nights of racing. The Bud Shootout will take place Friday, July 3, featuring the USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association, Sprint Series of Nebraska, IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Mods. Then on Saturday, July 4, the IMCA Modifieds headline the night, along with the IMCA Stock Cars, E-Modifieds and Pure Stocks.
